The only difference is what address you type to log in. That's it

Sep 21, 2016 8:10 AM in response to blkbloodby Roger Wilmut1,Using a GMail address as your Apple ID doesn't stop you from using any facility of iCloud. The only difference it makes is that your login address is different from the email address associated with the account. It's meant to work that way. Indeed if both addresses are the same you still need to provide a non-Apple address as a contact address in case of problems.
As you have presumably found out, you cannot change the ID address to your @icloud.com address. The only way to have them to same is to start from scratch and create the account from the iCloud Preference Pane - see Imp68's post here: Re: I wish to transfer my Apple ID to a new iCloud account
