Q: unreliable screen sharing

I have a MBPro and a Mac Mini both running Mavericks on the home network.  Suddenly screen sharing has become unstable.  Sometimes it works, more often it doesn't.  The set-up is as follows.  For reasons connected with my use of Virtualbox, the MBP is connected to the network via cable to an access point.  The Mini uses wifi.  I have tried connecting the Mini via cable to the same access point as the MBP and adding a route to the MBP via the cable port, but I get the 'cannot allocate memory' problem when I try to ping.

Any suggestions?

Can you quit using Virtualbox long enough to see if that is the problem?

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Eric.

Virtualbox is not actually running at the moment.  It is merely the reason the machine is connected by cable as opposed to being connected via wifi.  I need to use bridged networking, and this is extremely difficult if not impossible with a wifi connection.

    You are welcome.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Here's the output from the Mini, which is the one I primarily want to connect to the MBP.  (I have tried going in the opposite direction, which is as shaky as Mini copying MBP).

    QtPass

    [image: https://travis-ci.org/IJHack/qtpass.svg?branch=master] [image: https://ci.appveyor.com/api/projects/status/9rjnj72rdir7u9eg/branch/master?svg= true] [image: https://scan.coverity.com/projects/5266/badge.svg]

QtPass is a GUI for pass, the standard unix password manager.

    Features

    • Using pass or git and gpg2 directly

    • Configurable shoulder surfing protection options

    • Cross platform: Linux, BSD, OS X and Windows

    • Per-folder user selection for multi recipient encryption

    • Multiple profiles

Logo based on Heart-padlock by AnonMoos.

    Installation

    Dependencies

    • QtPass requires Qt 4.8 or later, preferably Qt5.

    • The Linguist package is required to compile the translations.

    • For use of the fallback icons the SVG library is required.

At runtime the only real dependency is gpg2 but to make the most of it, you'll need git and pass too.

Your GPG has to be set-up with a graphical pinentry when applicable, same goes for git authentication. On Mac OS X this currently seems to only work with MacGPG2 from gpgtools.

On most *nix systems all you need is:

qmake && make && make install

    Security considerations

Using this program will not magically keep your passwords secure against compromised computers even if you use it in combination with a smartcard.

It does protect future and changed passwords though against anyone with access to your password store only but not your keys. Used with a smartcard it also protects against anyone just monitoring/copying all files/keystrokes on that machine and such an attacker would only gain access to the passwords you actually use. Once you plug in your smartcard and enter your PIN (or due to CVE-2015-3298 even without your PIN) all your passwords available to the machine can be decrypted by it, if there is malicious software targeted specifically against it installed (or at least one that knows how to use a smartcard).

To get better protection out of use with a smartcard even against a targeted attack I can think of at least two options:

    • The smartcard must require explicit confirmation for each decryption operation. Or if it just provides a counter for decrypted data you could at least notice an attack afterwards, though at quite some effort on your part.

    • Use a different smartcard for each (group of) key.

    • If using a YubiKey or U2F module or similar that requires a "button" press for other authentication methods you can use one OTP/U2F enabled WebDAV account per password (or groups of passwords) as a quite inconvenient workaround. Unfortunately I do not know of any WebDAV service with OTP support except ownCloud (so you would have to run your own server).

    Known issues

    • Filtering (searching) breaks the tree/model sometimes

    • Starting without a correctly set password-store folder gives weird results in the tree view

    • On Mac OS X only the gpgtools MacGPG2 version works with passphrase or PIN

    Planned features

    • Re-encryption after users-change (optional of course)

    • Plugins based on field name, plugins follow same format as password files

    • Colour coding folders (possibly disabling folders you can't decrypt)

    • WebDAV (configuration) support

    • Optional table view of decrypted folder contents

    • Opening of (basic auth) urls in default browser? Possibly with helper plugin for filling out forms?

    • Some other form of remote storage that allows for accountability / auditing (web API to retrieve the .gpg files?)

The reports look pretty clean. Calendar is crashing on both computers. Are you syncing to a Google calendar?

Yes.  Apple wouldn't let me upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 8 or 9 which I needed to run certain apps.  So I scrapped it and bought an android phone so I need to sync to Google.  If they pull the same stunt with OSX I'll go back to Linux.  Mind you, it's a while since I checked whether someone has fixed a crack which allows the iPhone 4 to run iOS 8.

Did you find anything which might explain the problem with screen sharing?

Not really. The Calendar crashes may be part of the problem. Stop syncing with Google Calendar and see if it improves.

You might want to try moving these files to the Desktop and restarting. See if that helps.

Well, actually, Eric, thanks for your efforts, but I took the easy way out and installed VNC.  No problems, works fine.  The only reason I asked about screen sharing is a) because it has worked fine before and b) if there's a working Apple solution, it is usually better than the competition.

If I'm honest, I suspect this is caused by the decision to network the MBP via cable through an access point, but I don't have the time to test this hypothesis, and even if it is so, I'm not going to change back anyway.  At any rate the problem has occurred since that change to the system.  I did try to solve it by networking the Mini through the same access point, but that didn't work.
