iphone doesn't recognize its own WiFi

In a vacation home (with no internet) I start a wifi hotspot with my iphone to connect to an ATV. This works fine, but when I try to use the Remote app to control the ATV the iPhone says it isn't connected to a wifi network. Does anyone know how a work-around to get the iPhone to recognize its own hotspot?
