iPhone 7 battery drain

Hi,

I've recently purchased iPhone 7 and setup with iOS 10.0.1, restoring my Apple ID using laptop from an iPhone 6 which was running iOS 10.0.1 also.

For the past 3 days my iPhone 7 battery has been draining really quickly meaning i'm having to charge my phone at least twice a day and i've been using the phone very sparingly. My behaviors have not changed from Iphone 6 (if anything i'm using apps less due to poor battery drain), but i'm finding the phone battery life to be far worse than my previous iPhone and not acceptable.

I don't use battery intensive apps much such as Music or Pokemon go etc and my highest Battery % drain for past 4 days has been Twitter at 27% then Mail at 16%. i do have location services on for apps whilst using but as i say my general phone behavior has not changed since iPhone 6 and im finding the 7 to be draining very quickly. it also appears to charge slower as well.

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm certain I don't need to run the battery saving ideas that the call centre keep advising me to do.

Thanks

Hi.

Recently I bought a iPhone 7 that came with 10.1 iOS version and I realized that it had a very weird battery consumption.

The first thing I did was update iOS to 10.2 and did reset all settings, but the battery behavior not changed.

Yesterday I did a long test and I would like to hear an opinion from you if you find it normal or really the consumption is weird.

How I tested:

Did a DFU restore and reinstall 10.2;

Restored it as new;

Not logged in iCloud;

Not restored old backup;

Not installed any apps (i. e. only native apps installed);

Charged up to 100%;

I turned off Raise to Wake and Auto Brightness;

Put the phone in airplane mode;

Unplugged charger;

And went to sleep;

Results:

- After 6h 39minutes (standby time)(see attach)

- 4 minutes In Use (see attach)

- Battery decrease 5%

In my humble option, this battery consume is too much for a device that stayed 100% standby with all the default settings, no icloud sync and only standard application installed.

Additional information: according to battery applications (Battery Life, Coconut Battery) there is no battery degradation.

For comparison purposes I did the same test with iPhone 6s (iOS 10.2), 6 (IOS 10.2) and iPhone 5 (iOS 10.2) and all of them got 100% battery at the end of the test period.

Feel free to suggest and comment.

Apple FINALLY replaced my iPhone 7 after months of dealing with engineering. The replacement iPhone is better than the previous but I still don't see the same standby time that I did with my 6s. One key thing issue that told me there was a problem with the battery was that it would drain even while powered off. I would charge the battery to 100% and then turn it off overnight. The next morning after at least 8 hours, the battery would be between 82 and 88%. I have very light usage as compared to others. I don't do any sort of social media and make/receive about 8 calls per week. The majority of my usage is texting which is very light as compared to most people. Even with my sparse usage, I was still having to charge the phone just about everyday.

The replacement phone is getting about 2 to 3 days of standby with about 2 hours of usage. I haven't been able to charge it fully and just let it set to see how long it will actually go on standby. I have been a huge fan of all things Apple for many years but the iPhone 7 has killed that love. I really think it is a crap product and has issues. The problem is that Apple will never admit anything. Even when they saw my battery draining while powered off, they never admitted there was a problem. Based on your screenshots, I would say that your phone is similar to mine. Try powering it up to 100% and then shutting it off overnight.

I'm having the same issue with my 7 plus ever since it upgraded to 10.2. I've tested it where I'm in an environment where I'm connected to wifi and in the span of four hours with a couple text messages received and only looked at a twice for no longer then 30 seconds just to read the incoming message my battery has gone from 95% to 60%. Before applying update my phone with normal usage would last me from the moment I took it off it's charge at around 7:30 am until 10 pm my battery would be maybe 55-60% which was amazing compared to my 6 plus. Does anyone have any suggestions? My phone is only two months old and I'm about to call apple directly about it.

The only thing I can recommend is my overnight, power off test. This was a huge sign something was up for me. Just charge the phone to 100% and then turn it off. Check the battery the next day but try to give it at least 7-8 hours of being off. I was getting the kind of drain you are talking about with my previous unit before Apple FINALLY replaced it. Annoyingly, it took them almost two months to finally decide to replace the phone though. There was an ongoing case with "engineering". Basically, Apple like's to use customers as unpaid test subjects. Let you do all the work for free.

I had this same issue with my first iPhone 7. As I've stated several times (sounding like a broken record... sorry), my major tell was when the phone would lose power while powered off. The replacement phone doesn't have the same power loss behavior, however, it still isn't as good as my iPhone 6s was. I honestly got tired of Apple's way of supporting this over the phone and gave up. They want you to test it. Basically you get to play unpaid test subjects for them. They'll drag it out for months and it gets old rather quickly. I speak from experience because that is exactly what they did to me. From my first call until they finally decided to replace the previous phone, it was approximately two months. It continued another month with the new phone until I lost my patience with them and gave up. And don't think you'll get them to admit that anything is wrong even if there is. Your best bet is to document it the best way possible. Like video documentation because logs never showed any problem. I've also found that the stores tend to be far more helpful anymore... for the most part. I feel your pain and frustration (assuming you are frustrated at this point). The whole experience has left me with a disgust for Apple products that I can't shake. I am very tolerant of people that admit fault and then work towards resolution with true empathy and desire. But when you become dismissive and disconnected, my respect disappears.

Apple FINALLY replaced my iPhone 7 which took care of the battery draining while powered off problem, but the battery life is still crap. I would recommend that you get it swapped. That will at least help somewhat. Unfortunately, unless things have changed, and Apple has actually been willing to admit to a problem, you'll probably continue to have subpar battery life. I went from 100% down to 86% yesterday in about a 3 hour period. The total usage was 28 minutes according to the battery settings screen, which was mostly messages. Even then, it was a minor amount for such a major drain. We have two iPhone 6s devices in the house as well, so I can easily compare the differences on a daily basis. I REGRET upgrading to the iPhone 7. So much so, that I am seriously debating on ditching iPhone altogether as soon as I can. At least Samsung took responsibility when their devices started exploding. Apple admit fault? Never.

Hello almondo9,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community. I know how important it is to keep your device running as expected, and I'd like to help you with your battery life. If you have not done so already it's always a god idea to restart your phone after an update. If you already have and the battery is still running down rather quickly I'd recommend resetting the settings on your iPhone.

This will not delete anything from your phone. all of your apps, music and contacts will be safe. You may still wish to backup your settings data to iTunes or iCloud before doing this reset. This link will guide you through backing up if you choose to do so : How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

What this effectively does is to reset some of your settings to factory default. This does not remove any data like apps, photos or contacts, but It removes all of your preferences for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, Notifications, General, Sounds, Touch ID, Brightness & Wallpaper and Privacy, so we'll have to set those things back up after this reset.

To do this please go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

If the behavior persists, or you run into any trouble, the entire community is here to help.
Best Regards

Norm123...

I've seen you comment to several on different threads on the iPhone Community.

Do you have the new iPhone 7 or 7+ and are you running the latest iOS 10.0.1 ? The reason I ask, is I am wanting to know if you are experiencing this same issue and this was your fix, or is this simply a standard protocol to battery drainage issues, or freezing of apps (this was your recommendation on another thread).

This battery drainage issue is a real booger, especially for those of us who run their business through their devices.

There is definitely an issue with the newest iOS. Apple is obviously aware because there's already a new BETA out, some of my friends are testing it out. I for one don't like to risk my devices to BETA testing.

Thanks for the replies both. At present i'm in the process of arranging an exchange with Apple as still in 14 days period from purchase.

Norm123 - I have restarted phone since install (a few times unfortunately!). I have reset all factory settings and restored from backup however I haven't reset all settings as yet as you advise. I have also just restored from backup via itunes over the top and still no improvement.

Ragenator - Not good news. I've arranged a replacement as a number of my friends have got the new iphone 7 but dont seem to be witnessing the battery drain issues im having so im hoping to see improvement on new handset!
