iPhone 6s shuts down with plenty of battery juice left

My iPhone 6s frequently shuts down with anywhere between 40 - 70% battery still left. When I try to power it back on, the screen shows the "Connect to Charger" sign that is supposed to show up when you are truly out of battery juice.

Now for the quirky thing...this issue was occurring in iOS 9, then went away when I installed iOS 10 beta, and has come back in iOS 10. This leads me to think that it's a software issue.

Is anyone else reporting this issue? Is there is fix or patch in the making?

Hi there, sarangsupekar!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are having issues with your iPhone shutting down. I know how important it is to be sure the iPhone is working properly. First, check out this article with steps to Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch .

The next thing you might want to try is going to Settings on the iPhone and then to Reset. Once there, tap Reset all Settings. This will reset the iPhone settings, but not erase personal information such as photos, contacts, or music. It will, however, remove Wi-Fi and VPN settings so be sure you have those settings and passwords ready for when the iPhone is started back up.

If that doesn't work, it would be a good idea to be sure there is not a software issue as the root cause of this for you.

  1. Check out this article for the steps for How to backup your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
  2. Use this article for the steps to Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings.
  3. Once that is done, set the phone up as new and test the phone to see if the issue is still going on. Then, follow this article to Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup
Have a great day!

Hi

There is an iPhone 6s Program for Unexpected Shutdown Issues.

The program covers iPhone 6s devices within a limited serial number range that were manufactured between September and October 2015.

Apple advises that, if you have experienced the issue, you should visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider to have your iPhone examined and the serial number checked to confirm your eligibility for a battery replacement, free of charge.
