Export audio to third party audio editor

I searched through the archives to try to find any pertinent articles about this, but all I could find were articles posted back in 2012 shortly after FCP-X was first introduced. I know back then, Apple had pretty much stripped out of FCP all the export capabilities that were in FCP 7 for the purpose of exporting tracks so they could be brought over to a third party audio editor (like Pro Tools or Adobe Audition) for audio sweetening.

Now, I suspect this functionality is back in FCP-X in the form of the Export > XML option in the File menu.

But I wonder if anyone familiar with this operation could step me through it. I'm wanting to bring the discreet tracks (i.e., "attached storylines") inside FCP-X into a third party audio editor. I typically use Pro Tools for work like this. But I'm also asking for a friend, and he uses Adobe Audition. Neither one of us is a fan of Logic Pro. (I have it, but my eyes glaze over every time I try to make sense of it.)

Anyone here know how this is achieved when going to either Pro Tools or Adobe Audition?

Thanks in advance.

That's helpful for me. But for my friend, do you have a solution that would enable him to export his FCP-X project and bring it into Adobe Audition for audio sweetening? (I don't use Audition much anymore, so I'm not that familiar with whether it even works with XML. But I know Premiere Pro can port projects over to Audition for sweeting, so I'm guessing it's probably possible.)
