Q: Photos on macOS Sierra: Peoples Album does not sync with iCloud Photo Library

The Photos Help has just been updated for Sierra, and we finally have it in writing:

https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.2/?lang=en#/phtf5e48489c

Note: People identified in the People album are not synced across devices.

And as far as I can tell, it really does not sync between my Photos Libraries on the MacBook Pros and my iMac.

This is different in the iOS 10 user guide for the iPhone and iPad:

http://help.apple.com/iphone/10/#/iph9c7ee918c

People are synced among devices where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID.

I wonder, how this is supposed to work, if a Macs and iPhone are synced with iCloud User Library.

None of the faces I named on my iPhone did sync to my Mac.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), macOS Sierra (10.12), 2,8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB, 1TB

Another indication that the lack of syncing people and the names is intentional:

This document has now also been updated:

Use Photos and iCloud Photo Library on multiple Mac computers - Apple Support

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204486

After you sign in, these items appear in the Photos app on all of your Mac computers:

    • All original photos and videos
    • All folders and albums
    • Smart Albums
    • Keywords
    • Memories
    • Key photo selections

It used to say, that  the searchable faces tags will sync between the devices, but the tags are  no longer mentioned. Now we have the "Memories" instead.

It is a big disappointment that the syncing of the named persons is now even less supported than before - now even the searchable tags are no longer synced. Tagging people with names is such a lot of work, and having to do it over and over again is no joy.  iCloud Photos Library is supposed to sync the library between devices, and that should include all library items and metadata tags, not just a few. It is bad enough, that the smart albums do not sync to the iOS devices, because I am primarily using smart albums.

This is such a big frustration. I've tagged all people in my iOS device hoping to see them also tagged in macOS Sierra Photos and it didn't happen

I'll not tag anything anymore and I'm seriously considering Google Photos as my default photos app.

We need a flood of feedback to Apple with a feature request:

It is a huge disappointment. It means we have to tag the faces on every device and we have  thousands of photos. I am really surprised how Apple made such a decision. I don't think I will continue using their photos app.

Agreed on the feedback that this should be supported or at least an option to toggle (assuming Apple may have it disabled for Privacy reasons).

In previous macOS developer previews, release notes stated that People syncing was "disabled" so it is not as if the feature is missing, it's just not enabled. Hopefully a future update will enable the syncing.

I agree that until this is possible, tagging People and organizing People within iCloud Photo Library is a waste of time.

That is what some of the rumors are saying.

When I talked to Apple Support yesterday, the representative suggested that the syncing of faces is probably not enabled to save iCloud storage and syncing too many data to the iOS devices. But I doubt that syncing would increase the amount of data on the devices. Manually tagging the photos instead of syncing will need the same amount of storage on the device as synced people data.

This discussion is similar to my problem that in I added Titles to photos in an Album. I then shared the album and the Titles don't show up. Re: Captions (Titles) not shared

    No it is  totally different

Titles and people have nothing in common and iCloud Photo Library syncing has nothing in common with iCloud Photo Sharing

And as explained to you in your original thread iCloud Photo Sharing does not share titles or other photo information - only the photos and comments added to the share photo albums by subscribers

Hi - I wish it did sync. I am told my Apple Support that it only syncs between iOS devices and not Macs. Please suggest it as an 'enhanced feature' in via the feedback page http://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

I'm starting to doubt that it does sync between iOS devices either. There are so many reports in this forum, that the people sync does not happen, even if the iPhone/iPad user guides are claiming it does sync.

It's against the Apple philosophy, it seems to go back with the use of technology
