Q: After updating to macOS Sierra Live photos stopped working

Hey everybody!

After updating to macOS Sierra all live photos from my local photo library stopped working.

The spinner is endlessly spinning. I can’t do anything just watching how it spins

But I have 1 live photo in my iCloud account in shared, this photo I uploaded previously from El Capitan.

And precisely this photo has Live Photo button and works correctly. But the rest photos which are local from my library, all are just endlessly spinning. I tried to let it work for 5 hours (thought maybe its the problem of caching or whatever) but no result, just endlessly spinning spinner. Any suggestions?

    HI, Vince Snake!

Thanks for reaching out via the Apple Support Communities! After reading your post, I understand that you have several Live Photos in the Photos app on your Mac that used to play in OS X El Capitan, but now are having trouble loading in macOS Sierra. Live Photos are really neat and I love to share them; I know how important it is for them to be working. I'd be happy to help!

Since you've given the Live Photos time to load and they still haven't, I would suggest trying the following steps. Please do them in order, stopping when the issue is resolved:
    1. Quit the Photos app, then relaunch it while holding the Shift key on your keyboard.

    2. Restart your Mac by clicking the Apple  menu and selecting Restart... from the drop down

    3. Try loading the Live Photos in safe mode. The following article will give you information on safe mode, and how to access it: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up

Even though the title of the article is not specific to your issue, safe mode is still a good step to try. It will run a scan of your system during boot, and will also disable certain software and processes that could be causing a conflict

    4. Try loading the Live Photos in another user account. The following article will give explain why testing in another user account is a good step to take, and provide instructions on how to set up a new account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

    Cheers!

    Thank you Jeremy!

Unfortunately non of these helped me. Though new imported live photos work, but the old one from El Capitan...

I just see this spinner spins endlessly, but totally nothing happens. Maybe the library was damaged somehow during rebuilding to the new version if iPhotos. Sadly but I don't have these photos on my phone already.
