Q: New Apple Watch - No Activity Recorded

I purchase a new Series 1 Apple Watch.  I set it up first thing this morning and since I have had it, everything seems fine except I have activity recorded in my first five hours of use.  That is 0 Steps and 0 Standing time.  I have been standing and I have been walking.  Is there any additional things I need to do for the watch to record activity.  I am wondering if it broken or hardware problem.

    Hi

    The following steps may help:

    • Check that you have set up the Activity app on your watch:
      • When viewing the time on your watch face, tap on the Activity rings icon / complication, or;
      • Go the Home screen (via a single press of the Digital Crown) and tap on the Activity app icon (coloured rings).
      • To get started, you will need to enter some personal information.

    • On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness - check that both Fitness Tracking and Health are enabled.

    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Privacy > Motion & Fitness - check that Heart Rate and Fitness Tracking are both enabled.

    • Check that Wrist Detection is turned on and that, if passcode is enabled, you are unlocking your watch after placing it on your wrist
      • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Wrist Detection - turn on.

    • Check that you are wearing your watch sufficiently snugly on the top of your wrist (if it is worn too loosely, your watch may believe that it has been removed from your wrist).

    • In order to credit progress towards your daily Exercise goal, the Activity app aims to identify activity that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk. This applies both during general daily wear and when recording workouts via the Workout app.
      • The definition of a brisk walk varies by person and depends on your personal information. To check that your personal information is accurate:
        • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

    • For the purpose of crediting the hourly Stand achievement, your watch aims to identify when you have stood up and moved around for at least one minute during that hour. Apple Watch uses an accelerometer to identify movement, so arm movement equivalent to changing from a seated to a standing position followed by a minute's walk around with your arms swinging naturally should help to register this.

    • Calibrating your watch can improve the accuracy of activity-related estimations, including Exercise. Instructions for calibrating your watch e available via the support article linked below.

    • If you would prefer to receive Exercise credit for the full duration of any workouts, regardless of their intensity levels, track them via the Workout app and choose Other as the activity type. This will credit one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout. Active calories will be estimated at a rate equivalent to a brisk walk or based on data recorded by the heart rate sensor, whichever is higher.

I have checked all of these things and everything is set up correctly.  I understand that walking at normal pace should not count as "exercise" but it should count towards steps and activity.   My steps are at 0.

Besides potentially being affected by a loose fitting band, sensor performance (and, in turn, Wrist Detection and activity tracking) can also be affected by temporary or permanent changes to your skin, such as some wrist tattoos.

Thanks your responses Jonathan.  Again, I have checked all settings, band is on tightly.  Screen works when I rotate to look at watch, but no activity data.

I looked at my iPhone Health app and is not getting any step data from Watch either.  All Step data is coming from iPhone.

Do I have a dud Apple Watch?

I used to have the same problem. If the arm where the watch is on is not moving you can walk all day and nothing will be added.
