Q: safari 10 unable to download Gmail attachments

Since upgrading to Safari 10 when I click the download link in a Gmail attachment it doesnt work.  Other files download just fine.

I tested downloading Gmail attachments with Firefox and it works fine.

How do I fix this?

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

I think the issue arises from how gmail is now integrated with google drive. For *.pdf or *.jpg files, the right click and save as option works fine. For *.doc or *.xlsx however, the download link actually points to a google doc (stored on your google drive?), thus right clicking to "save linked document as" doesn't work. It's just a hyperlink and not the actual file.

Practically speaking, just click through to "Organize in Drive" and you can download the file directly from that page without issue. Not ideal, but hopefully someone on the Safari team fixes this soon.

This problem has disappeared for me since I upgraded to Sierra. While I was still in El Capitan, I was able to have it go away by re-starting in Safe Mode, and then re-starting again as usual. After a week or so, the problem reappeared and I had to do this again.

But since upgrading to Sierra several weeks ago, it has not recurred at all.
