My iPod nano 2nd gen gets disk errors after installing iTunes?

I've been using my iPod nano 2nd gen for...wow pretty much 10 years now and sure it's not as responsive, a bit laggy sometimes, battery life isn't as good but still never had any real problems with it that can't be fixed by a reset. Well not until now and I don't really have to money to spend to get a new one, especially the fact that practically it still works fine on it's own, just that I can't add or remove songs from it anymore.

The Problem

It seems like the computer has trouble reading the device. Whenever I plug in my iPod nano 2nd gen through usb into my laptop (Windows 10), anything that has some sort of interaction with it freezes up. So the moment I plug it in, programs like Winamp, iTunes, file explorer(if I click on My Computer -> try to right click on the drive, which just says drive F: instead of the usual recognized name like "My iPod."), device manager when i try to enable/disable Apple iPod USB Driver, and the little icon in system tray when you try to eject, the dropdown doesn't show anymore, all these programs themselves just freeze up and go Not Responding until I unplug the device. In event viewer, the instant I plug it in, it gets spammed with looping errors of:

Error: The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR21, has a bad block.

Warning: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR21 during a paging operation.

So basically it seems like the computer just gets stuck trying to read and recognize the device which means I can't really do anything with it. The iPod itself seems to function fine, I can listen to songs, recharge battery and stuff, just now that I can't add or remove songs from it.

Stuff leading up to it

A year or two ago I used to manage the ipod through itunes (a relatively older version of the time too I'd imagine since I pretty much never update it) till I formatted my laptop a while ago and never bothered reinstalling itunes. Since then I haven't really needed to change anything from my iPod and just been using Winamp(my default music player) for adding/removing a couple songs when I needed to. Today I decided to install iTunes since there's some stuff that winamp can't do like add embedded lyrics and also winamp scrambles up the sorted song list. And since then after installing the newest iTunes, programs start freezing up and I get the problems described above. There might be a chance that iTunes wasn't the actual culprit and the disk was already starting to get corrupted or something somehow, but I can't think of anything else that happened before this problem started.

Things I've tried

  • Uninstalled iTunes and all other stuff related to the installation like Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support ...etc
  • Reinstalling the Apple iPod USB Device driver. When I disable it (Plug in iPod -> iPod displays "Do not disconnect" -> Device manager -> right click driver -> disable -> device manager freezes up -> unplug ipod -> device manager unfreezes -> plug ipod back in) ipod just becomes charging state. Steps to reinstalling is the same (need to plug and unplug).
  • Reseting iPod by holding menu button + center button.
  • Going to iPod diagnostics mode by resetting then holding rewind + center button. It doesn't have a harddrive test because I'm guessing nano doesn't have a harddrive just flash ram. Anyways when I select SDRAM QScan it just says "SDRAM OK". NAND_SPEC gives "NandLBA = 1982464". Flash Checksum gives "Checksum = 0x26AF".
  • Wanted to try disk error checking as described here but can't because computer can't recognize it correctly and explorer just freezes up if I right click. Tried using "chkdsk f:" in the command prompt but that seems to hang as well.
  • Going into disk mode by reseting ipod then holding center + play button. Then plugging into laptop...etc, same problem.

It's a pretty old device so it seems like support for it is much scarce. I didn't think installing iTunes would screw up the device it's meant to support and do anything as permanent as this.

You should rule out a faulty USB docking cable, by trying a different one, or using your current cable with another Apple device, to confirm it works properly.

Otherwise, your troubleshooting seems comprehensive. If this is what you did for Disk Mode

and connecting it to your computer causes this general "freeze up" issue with multiple processes, the iPod may have a hardware problem. Flash-based storage does eventually wear out. Or it may be a problem on the iPod's logic board.

I would suggest trying to reformat the iPod using Windows, like it's a USB flash drive. But you can't do that if the system locks up when you connect iPod.

NOTE: If you find a way to reformat iPod using Windows, use FAT32 as the disk format. If there's an option to do a quick format, do a full format instead. When the process completes, the iPod is completely blank. You must do Restore using iTunes (whether prompted or not), to put back the iPod's onboard software.

Oh right I forgot to put it into the original post. I'm tried the same usb cable on an iPhone and that seemed to work fine, so I don't think it's the cable.

I'm assuming u mean reformat iPod using windows is steps that look something like this:

  • Open “My Computer” on your Desktop
  • Select “IPOD”. It should be listed next to your C drive.
  • Right click and choose “Format”
  • Select “FAT 32” and <Format>
  • Reboot Computer

But yea like you said the file explorer freezes up when I try to right click the drive.
