NTFS writing stopped working in Sierra

I use a Toshiba external drive formatted in NTFS.

Since upgrading to Sierra I can not write to this drive.

I was able to write to it previously, as I used it exclusively with my Mac.

I have a Macbook Pro Retina early 2013.

What should I do to resolve the write issue?

Since OSX has never been able to natively write to NTFS formatted volumes, you were almost certainly using some type of NTFS driver to make it possible previously, something like Paragon, or Tuxera or the like

OSX updates tend to break these drivers and you would need to find an update for these drivers that works on Sierra.

You'll need to identify what driver you are using for this first.

I will be moving the data off this drive and reformatting.

If you are using the software bundled with the drive, make sure you uninstall it after reformatting. Some posts from the El Capitan forum seem to indicate it may still interfere with the drive even when it is formatted as OS X Extended.

However, if you are using the retail version of Tuxera, you shouldn't have any problems, so removing it would be optional.

I just had the same issue with a Seagate drive. I was using NTFS for OS X by paragon and couldn't update it or access it through system preferences due to an error message "Could not load Paragon NTFS for Mac ® OS X preference pane.". The icon was a background X with NTFS beneath so if anyone else has this issue then go to http://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/ba ckup-plus-desk/ or similar and seagate has a new paragon driver for free for OS 10.9 and above. It only works for Seagate, Samsung & Maxtor devices but I suspect if you're having this problem that your HDD manufacturer may have a driver solution for you.

I seem to have solved this issue by saving the downloaded update from the Toshiba website to my desktop. I then clicked on a folder in the upper left corner called .packages and then bundles folder inside that. I then installed the application from the installer found in the bundles folder. It worked. Not only was I able to install this version of Tuxera, but I was also able to update it to the newer 2016 version.

Just wanted to add that it is a temporary solution. Seems that you need go through the steps each time you connect your drive to your Mac otherwise it says your product key is invalid. I don't know why it does it. Hopefully Toshiba will post a permanent solution to this issue with Sierra and their embedded Tuxera software.

Yes obviously it would. But the reason I bought the specific external drive was its ability to work both on a Mac and on a PC and that is what I paid for. Personally, I think it's the responsibility of the manufacturer to ensure that their products work as they are supposed to, thus their obligation to upgrade the software in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, sometimes there is a time lag and we need to find some work around solution so that we can continue using what we originally paid for temporarily, but ultimately the permanent solution should come from them.
