Oct 17, 2016 11:25 AM in response to Mike Walker1by JedWare,Just updated to 10.0.3 from 10.0.2 with same "Attempting data recovery" step when updating via iTunes.
I am not sure what to say to people that get stuck on that step. It does take a long time on this step. This does not occur on any other devices other than the iPhone 7.
I am suspicious that the encryption option in iTunes is the cause of this issue. Are other people using encrypted backups?

Oct 17, 2016 12:09 PM in response to JedWareby JerryOnTheBlock,Yep,
Same issue updating from 10.0.2 to 10.0.3. No encryption backup here. Let's hope apple got this update right and the next update will no longer have this issue.
One thing to point out that has not been addressed. I had to restore my 10.0.2 update in order for IOS10 to recognize the carrier update.

Oct 17, 2016 3:01 PM in response to Mike Walker1by pabramley,Same problem installing 10.0.3 from iTunes.
Received iPhone 7 4 days ago, set-up as new phone from 10.0.0 (no restored back-up). Installed 10.0.2 over the air. Just tried to installed 10.0.3 from iTunes and got this worrying and confusing message.

Oct 17, 2016 3:50 PM in response to pabramleyby JedWare,Thanks for the information. This really seems to point to a bug. If this is standard then they should change the message from "Attempting Data Recovery" to "Finishing Installation".

Oct 17, 2016 11:10 PM in response to joe_7399by Tario70,Attempting Data Recovery... With Video!
The history:
- Updated my iPhone 7 128GB from 10.0.0 to 10.0.1 on launch day in the USA. This is a clean update with the phone setup as new. Upon reboot after install I saw "Press Home to Recover". Once I pressed home I got the "Attempting Data Recovery" Screen.
- Roommate on iPhone 7+ 128GB updates via iTunes (different computer than the iPhone 7) 10.0.0 to 10.0.1 after a restore of their backup. Upon reboot after install "Press Home to Recover" followed by the "Attempting Data Recovery" screen.
- Update my iPhone 7 128GB via iTunes from 10.0.1 to 10.0.2. Upon reboot get the "Press Home to Recover" followed by the "Attempting Data Recovery" screen.
- Roommate updates iPhone 7+ 128GB via Over-the-Air option from 10.0.1 to 10.0.2. Upgrade completes & home screen returns without a "press home to recover" & "attempting data recovery" did not show up.
- Update my iPhone 7 128GB via iTunes from 10.0.2 to 10.0.3. Upon reboot get the "Press Home to Recover" followed by the "Attempting Data Recovery" screen.

Here's a link to the sped up video. It took just over 12 minutes to update the phone due to this "Attempting Data Recovery". I sped up the video to 2x to get it to just over 6 minutes: https://youtu.be/O4rtZ5NQYMIAll updating via iTunes was done on a Windows 10, x64 fully up to date machine with the latest versions of iTunes.
So Apple, any ideas?

Oct 18, 2016 4:13 PM in response to Mike Walker1by Romplestiliskin,This is kinda freaky. These updates with the recovery are taking longer than previous updates. I would've thought Apple would've had this issue fixed. Maybe they will in 10.1?

Oct 19, 2016 1:05 AM in response to Mike Walker1by Jim Bob, Wasilla,iPhone7 256GB tried to update to 10.0.3 today while plugged into iTunes. Said it was downloading update then when I returned a while later the process had stopped and the phone said "Attempting data recovery" white screen with black apple logo; it's usually black screen with white logo. This took about 10 mins to complete. Phone "seems" to be ok.
Apple what did I do wrong apart from buy one of your dodgy products?
