Can't shutdown MacBook Pro after upgrading to macOS Sierra

Yesterday I had upgraded my MacBook Pro from OS X El Capitan to macOS Sierra. Unfortunately I can't shutdown him, I can't even reboot. Everytime I shutdown/reboot I get a black screen (no cursor) and it stays frozen. I have to hold the power button for a few seconds in order for it to shutdown. I want to avoid clean install and setting everything up. Does anyone have any idea what causes this problem? I have cleaned caches and reset NVRAM without any effect.

... I have cleaned caches

I recommend you do not do that, especially with any non-Apple "cleaning" utility. All those things can do is cause trouble. An SMC reset will delete certain system cache files: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac. That is all anyone should ever do.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been.

Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.

I have this problem with a Mac mini, too. It seems that it works before completing the shutdown. The only thing I see is a black screen, which says it has no signal. Actual it is in this state since 8 hours. Every 2 minutes or so it does something with the hard disk.

Maybe a problem with photoanalysisd? I have some 20,000 photos. I heard such amounts could need more than 24 hours to complete analysis. How many photos do You have?

Thank you for the response.

After starting macbook in safe mode issue was not visible, but after restart unfortunately it was again. I have remove all programs from preferences -> my account -> login. But this also didn't help me. I have create temporary account but still it didn't help me. After some time I found the cause of the problem - if I disable starting MySQL server on macbook startup, then there is no problem with shutdown. It seems that MySQL server is not working correctly with macOS sierra.

I've reported the same problem (Macbook Air won't shutdown correctly) as have several other users.

I've read the post about it being related to MySQL. When I've gone to Preferences to disable MySQL running on startup, and to stop the service, my Macbook crashes!

Apple seriously need to provide a resolution to this. There's no way that the OS should fail to shutdown normally because a background process like MySQL can't be stopped? A lot of developers, including myself, use MySQL, so this will be affecting a lot of people.

Hi there,

So do you have MySQL Server installed?

I do and it's set to start at login, so I found out after updating to Sierra that it was MySQL causing this issue.

If you do have MySQL you can try this:

Go on System Settings > MySQL > Stop MySQL Server

If it takes a long time to Stop, then the culprit is the same.

I fixed it going on MySQL website and downloading the latest MySQL Server available (downloaded the dmg that contains an installer).

Now everything's fine.

$ mysql -V

mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.7.16, for osx10.11 (x86_64)

I had 5.7.11

Cheers
