The problem exists because Whatsapp tells the iOS there is an incoming call when playing voice messages, so iOS pause and mute the music and tells the bluetooth device there is an incoming call. Now the problem is that Whatsapp then play the voice messages through the usual audio API for music, hence muted.

I found out because some times I can hear part of the voice message before it gets muted, proper and clear sound, not garbage or anything. So that means it's nothing to do with codec as many other suggested.

So while I was playing with all the settings, I found that if the phone function is switched off on the bluetooth device, Whatsapp voice messages would play through bluetooth devices.

This is the only solution I found over the years, but if you're bluetooth device have phone function and can't be switched off, I guess you'll have to wait for Whatsapp to fix this. It surely can be fixed, since WeChat and Line don't have this problem.

I contacted Whatsapp about this. Their answer has not really been helpful:

Here is what I wrote:

Hello

The WhatsApp audio messages don’t play over Bluetooth. You just hear a small amount of garbled noise or simply don’t hear anything.

I am on an iPhone 5, iOS 10.0.2, WhatsApp 2.16.11. I have tested with my Bose QC35 bluetooth headphones and my Plantronics Voyager Legend bluetooth headset.

No other app is showing problems. I have tested with Skype, Viber and Facebook Messenger and everything is working fine there.

The problems are only with the voice messages recorded with the device microphone and sent by a person, videos and other type of audio files sent via Whatsapp play without any issue.

Reading on the internet I have found several people reporting these kind of problems:

http://forums.imore.com/ask-question/338177-my-whatsapp-voice-msgs-doesnot-work- my-bluetooth-headset.html

https://origin-discussions-us.apple.com/thread/7677209?start=0&tstart=0

I hope you can come back to me with an answer about this.

Thank you.

This was their answer:

Hi,

Sorry for the delay! We have received many emails recently, and we do our best to answer them all. Thank you for your patience.

WhatsApp provides limited support for Bluetooth devices. You should be able to receive WhatsApp notifications and voice calls. Any issues you have are likely caused by the OS and not WhatsApp itself. Please contact your device manufacturer for additional assistance.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Sincerely,

As WhatsApp is the only app struggling with this issue I believe it is not iOS what is in fault here, but their own app. As I wrote before Skype, Facebook Messenger and other apps are working just fine when playing voice messages over a Bluetooth device.

What is really strange is that the Whatsapp voice messages (human messages as other audio messages sent via Whatsapp do not show any problems) appear to be using a different audio codec than the used by the whatsapp videos. When you start to play back an audio message you hear a distinctive tone over the Bluetooth headset, this does not happen with the videos, where you don't get any tone.

I looks like we have to accept that this will not be corrected. Some of the reports date some years back so I don't think Whatsapp has given them too much attention. I just hope that this disappears when I upgrade to the iPhone 7.

Thanks so much DavidG74,

This is definitely is the WhatsApp problem but not the IOS.

But, could be the problem from IOS 10 coz this issue happened after I upgrade to IOS 10.

I am in the exactly situation as what u have now.

Sadly, I doubt the iPhone7 can do a better job since we all with IOS 10 but is nice to have a reason to change the phone.

I'm using 6S. I decided to live with it since too many peoples are using WhatsApp. I have to stick with it.

As I said above, I tried to uninstall and reinstall again, try to even format my 6S in safe mode and restore again.

It is doesn't work out anyway.

Thanks for your word, I wish you may figure it out when u got 7. Good day.

Hi RandyNight,

Thanks for your input!

Your case is exactly what DavidG74 mentioned above.
However, it was working all fine on my 5S and 6S IOS 9 series,

As soon as both devices upgrade to latest IOS 10. Both Whatsapp failure.

Recap DavidG74 replied and quote the word from Whatsapp. Seem we gotta live with it until someone Genius to figure it out and share the trick with the public. No hope from Whatsapp at the moment.

Would you agree with me?

I have similar problem. Whatsapp voice notes do not play through my audi bluetooth after upgrading to ios10. Just goes quiet for the duration of the voice note. Strangely Whatsapp calls work fine. I also contacted Whatsapp and got the same response - blah blah blah. I think the problem is with ios10 as it worked fine with ios9.

Totally agree with you, Dormans.

The only problem is the voice msg from Whatsapp.

Rest of the functions are working fine.

Have no idea why WhatsApp said this is not their problem.

Don't try to do anything on it as I did whatever I can to regain the voice msg function but all failed.

Good luck on us.

Hi RandyNight
I believed is WA prob. Yesterday I discovered sth new.
WA voice msg with unreadable performance, when linked to any Bluetooth devices (Including headphone, car audio system), also happened on Mobile devices with IOS 10+.
WA desktop version (Mac, IOS 10+) voice msg is no problem at all. All voice msg can be read clearly.
Narrow down the issue would be WA mobile IOS 10+ got an issue with Bluetooth linked.
