I see that you've posted today because the Apple menu shows two updates available, but these updates never seem to populate in the App Store. I know it's important to keep your Mac up to date, and I'd like to assist.
My recommendation is to create a new "test" user account and see if you notice the same behavior there. Take a look at this website for more information on how to create a test user account on your Mac:How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support
After you log into the test user account, check to see if you still see a "2 new" notification in the Apple Menu.
