iMac - Crackling sound comes and goes (left speaker)

My 2008 iMac has randomly been making a crackling sound from the left speaker. This sound just happens randomly even when I am not playing music or have mute on. The crackling sound goes away when I plug in headphones or external speakers. Any ideas what this is and how to fix this?
