Safari 10 High CPU Usage

Safari 10.0 (12602.1.50.0.10) on macOS Sierra (16A323) ramps up to 200% CPU usage per Activity Monitor in a few seconds. Both the Safari and the web content processes show at this high level. Opening a second tab (even a blank one) will use another 200% until the CPU is full, after which the per-tab web content process CPU share drops to fit them all in and the CPU stays maxed out. The specific web page does not seem to matter at all.

The computer is a mid-2012 Retina MBP, 2.3 GHz i7 with 8 GB ram.

Please tell me that I'm not the only one seeing this, thanks!

High CPU usage isn't usually due to the app itself, more likely due to Safari extensions and third party plug-ins.

From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Uninstall one extension then quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.

Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

Thanks for the quick reply!

Disabling the one extension and the plug-ins had no effect on the CPU usage. Just to be sure, disabling JavaScript also has no effect. Interestingly enough, while in Mail.app reading the notification email of your reply I noticed that the Mail Web Content process was at 100% for about 10 minutes before dropping.

And now as I type this, the web content process for this tab (the only open tab) has dropped to less than 1%. I would love to know what causes this and if I am able to reproduce it.

Thanks again!

Exact same here too. Start Safari, no Page open, CPU at over 120 instantly, then down to 99-100%. Cant close even Safari even after 5 seconds, already stuck. Ram climbs continously, the first time i encountered it up to 65 GB, still rising.

Extensions disabled, no new installed. Just installed sierra 12 hours ago.

Same Safari and Sierra Version like nycradik from first post. Using a Mac Book Air.

Kind Regards

Dominik

Safari is crashing.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

Actually I end up finding that the problem was with RAPPORT TRUSTEER, a software from my bank. I'm from Brazil. With the update of Safari and Sierra, my home bank page stoped working. When I stopped the service, the browser started to act normal again. But fyi it's not an extension. Thanks for the help Eric. I actually deleted the .db file also and learned a thing or two.

Best Regards.

Sep 22, 2016 12:34 PM in response to nycradik

The same problem has been happening on my MacBook Pro, however the issue was resolved after uninstalling Trusteer Rapport. If you have this program installed on your Mac and are experiencing issues, I would recommend removing it for now until IBM can implement some sort of fix for this issue.

In addition, during the public beta of macOS Sierra, Rapport seemed to be having trouble installing itself on the OS – every time I attempted an installation, the installer would crash and then my Mac would unexpectedly restart. Not sure if that relates to why the plugin is acting up in Safari, but could be relevant.

Sep 22, 2016 5:28 PM in response to nycradik

See here: http://www.trusteer.com/support/uninstalling-rapport-mac-os-x

Download the .dmg file linked on this page (there will be a link in the banner at the top of the page saying "click here to update Rapport for Mac" – if there is a message relating to Windows computers instead, just wait a few seconds for the banner to change back to displaying the link for Mac users).

Then open the .dmg file after it has downloaded and run the "Uninstall Rapport" tool from the window that appears.

Hope this helps!
