garbage phone number for fax

When trying to send a fax, if I use a number from contacts, the phone number on the fax display contains many garbage characters before the correct phone number and it fails to connect. I'm guessing that the "garbage" is the person's name from the contact. How do I prevent these characters from being sent to the fax? I can send a fax if I just type in the number.
