iPhone 7 GPS constantly changing in Maps

With 10.2 my GPS-recordings (iSmoothRun) are way better than before. See the screenshots (orange 10.2, violet 10.1) It's still not as good as on iPhone 6, but I I hope they can still improve it with the next iOS version.

Distance was also OK. Gamin: 7.57 km - iPhone 7: 7.73 km. That's almost OK for me.

I tried turning Bluetooth off on both phones (and had no other bt devices nearby) - no difference, the iPhone 7 recorded 2 km with Strava where the 6 recorded 1.6.

I see no difference with iSmoothRun with 10.2. I got 13.3 km on a 12.6 km run yesterday. That's better than with the previous version of iSmoothRun and better than with Strava, but not at all good enough.

Are you sure you used the same version of iSmoothRun for the two runs? The new version was released only 8 days ago and imho your 10.1 run looks like it may have been recorded with the old version of iSmoothRun.

I'm not sure, if the picture I've posted was already recorded with the new version, but this one is from yesterday with the new version of iSmoothRun and iOS 10.1.

Maybe 10.2 in combination with iSmoothRun is doing a great job.

Here's a detail from my run yesterday, the 12.6 km run recorded as 13.3. My iPhone 6 was also a little off yesterday, but by much less - it recorded 12.83 km. I don't think I need to explain which of these map details is from the iPhone 7 and which is from the iPhone 6 😟. Both were recorded with the newest iSR version and iOS 10.2:

OK. To be fair, right now it's just one good recording today. I'll see, if the next run on friday has the same quality.

I'm really glad, that my main recording device is a Garmin Forerunner. But I like the intervall guidance on my headphones of iSmooth run and I can't use it for distance based intervalls right now. So I had to switch to time based intervalls until this GPS problem is resolved.

Second run with iOS 10.2 and the new version of iSmoothRun and everything is back to "normal". It's still bad GPS reception and much longer distance recording (Garmin 5.77 km, iPhone 6.8 km).

So I had a good day yesterday (Why?) and iOS 10.2 changes nothing in regard of the GPS problem 😟

Why? Because it depends on the gps reception, I think. I get the worst results in places where even my iPhone 6 may struggle - e.g. between high buildings, and the best results on the countryside (actually, one of the first times I used the iPhone 7 for running and noticed the problem was a trail run where it measured 14.2 km for a run that was officially 13.4. I was pi**ed, but it's actually the best I ever got with the previous version of iSmoothRun!).

Btw I returned my third phone yesterday. I'm not going to give up before this is fixed.

My fourth phone so far seems a little better, but still not good enough for tracking runs.

Since I bought my phone in Germany, they keep exchanging it for a phone meant for the German, Dutch and Swiss markets. I've noticed Germans participating here - could there be specific problems with this version of the A1778 model?

I have a A1784, and I have similar problems - GPS way off, suddenly 100+ m off the road in the middle of the water.

Sometimes it works fine, but then it starts getting buggy - maybe when changing Network technology from 4G to 3G.

Really hope Apple can patch this, as my shop wants to send the phone for repair!!

My phone (and especially the newest I got yesterday) is not that much off, it's just not as precise as my iPhone 6 (or 5, for that matter), it just often veers 10-30 meters off track where the iPhone 6 is spot on.

Getting this issue on a new iPhone 7 plus. Google Maps can navigate but the animations during turn by turn guidance are jerky. No issue on Apple Maps.

I have changed my Iphone 7 two weeks ago (Genius Bar changed it, recognizing the problem), the results seem better but still less precise than Iphone 5 or a SAMSUNG A3 2015.

I confirm to have A1778 model.

I suppose in all the advertising for the 7 Apple simply forgot to mention that the mapping is worthless now because they utterly ruined the GPS.

I have no idea how or why. My guess is a cheaper GPS chip.

So, I'm back to my trusty HTC for anything that needs location to better than about 500mtrs
