This happens so often, multiple times every day, that I should post a User Tip providing step-by-step instructions.

Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk. If there is a Rule 0 it should be to have a backup, which of course you can't do if you already installed junk. There are ways around that though.

Csound1 is right, but if you need comprehensive step-by-step instructions please create a new Discussion because you will need your own individual attention.

Many things won't work with utterly useless non-Apple "anti-virus" garbage installed. Time Machine is just one of them.

So . . . do you have to turn off your AV for every back up? Remembering to do that every hour sounds worse than the original problem, which I still have, sadly

No. I just turn off wifi every now and then. Backup would finish within minutes, 1 or 2 most of The time.

This is obviously a temporary solution.

I'll make a clean install of Sierra as suggested by Csound1 and see how it goes.

This worked for me. Such a simple solution- just having the Mail App open during the first backup. Thank you.

i included an exception to spotlight for my backup drive and i have no antivirus running. Any other suggestions. I am on just a few Gb and time machine says 7 hours
