Q: Hi I'm OSX 10.8.5 with 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 processor.  I just bought a iPhone7  and the iTunes I have now is 12.4.1.6 and it won't read it since it requires iTunes 12.5.1.  My OSX 10.8.5 won't support that iTunes.  So I can't use my new iPhone7.

Hi I have a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro and latest OSX now is 10.8.5.  iTunes is on 12.4.1.6 and both iTunes and OSX won't go higher.  I bought a iPhone7+ and now it needs iTunes 12.5.1.  Won't read my now phone.  How to go around this?

    You don't get around this.

You would need a new Mac Os and a newer iTunes version.

Can you not download the latest OS Sierra?

No workaround.  iOS10 requires iTunes 12.5.1 or newer which in turn requires OSX 10.9.5 or newer.  OSX 10.9 and 10.10 are no longer available. Check this article on upgrade options: If your Mac is not Compatible with Sierra but you Have Not Upgraded to El Capitan  - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-10692  El Capitan (OSX 10.11) and Sierra (OSX 10.12) may run slower on older machines and require additional RAM purchase (4 GB is a realistic minimum and many recommend 8GB).  Doing a big jump in system versions is also more likely to affect old software.

Thats what I thought. I am running Mountain Lion 10.85 but iTunes 12.4.3.1 and I now have IOS 10.0.1 on iPhone SE and everything seems to work. Can sync music, calendars, conracts etc

I was trying to solve an issue with the cellular signal dropping and just decided to upgrade the phone to iOS10 over wifi and set it up as a new device. I thought it might not be recognised by iTunes after that. iTunes recognised it fine so I then restored a backup I made when the phone was on iOS 9.3.3 and all went fine.

Didn't resolve the cellular signal dropping though.

upgrade the phone to iOS10 over wifi and set it up as a new device.

Yes, we saw cases with iOS9 release where people upgrading over wi-fi were able to use an older iTunes, but that isn't a guaranteed thing, nor is it possible to do that once one has upgraded using iTunes.
