I cant close a app

I was trying to update my macbook air but then it said that it couldn't update because '______.app' needs to be closed however I cannot force quit the application. And when I try to open it, it says that the package does not contain anything because I deleted what the app had inside it. I looked in the terminal but also couldn't find it there either. I can't seem to find it in my application folder but just my desktop.

In conclusion I cannot move the application into the trash or close it so that I cant update my laptop.

I have OS X El Captain version 10.11.6

Please help asap. Thanks.

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Greetings SilverScout,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It seems like you want to update the MacOS version but there is a program running in the background you cannot close. One thing you can do is to boot into safe mode which disables any programs from running. Once in there you can try to update the MacOS version.
I would recommend you read this article, it has the steps to follow to boot into safe mode.

Take care.
