Q: Time Machine takes ages and does not complete

Since I have upgraded to Sierra my TM backups do not work any more. The console log is flooded with messages like this:

default08:18:16.941490 +0200backupdClaim A79F2E3C-1CE1-47BC-8AFE-5D665E606DE0 was revoked

I did already erase my TM backup disk and started a new initial backup. It did 30 GB (of ~80) in the last 14 hours, but now is stuck and says 13 hours remaining.

I am using a normal USB 3.0 external HDD for the backups.

Any ideas?

    Hello there, G-Tech1!

Thanks for reaching out to the â€‹Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are having issues with Time Machine. I know how important it is to be sure your computer is backing up properly. There are a couple of articles available that will help you with steps for this issue. First, check out If you can‘t back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine and try the steps there. If those don't work; check out this article and the steps in it for, If a Time Machine backup takes longer than you expect. Both articles cover the issues you are having and will give you some great options to get the issues resolved.

    Have a great day!

I looked at the solutions recommended in the two links you posted and I still have this problem. Console log is flooded with the same messages. I've restarted Time Machine a few times already and it's either completely stuck or extremely slow (151KB backed up after an hour!).

This problem arose only after upgrading to Sierra. Perhaps that is the cause? Are there any other recommended solutions?

    Thank you!

    Hi,

i'm having exactly the same issue. After upgrading from El Capitan to Sierra a few days ago Time Machine is extremely slow. I already deleted my old backups and started a fresh backup to a new external usb 3.0 hdd.

In more than 16 hours time machine saved only 38gb (from 220gb). These are the log files from console:

I did not change anything except the update to Sierra. Please provide a solution, thank you!

I finally found out that it was Sophos Antivirus that made the backup extremely slow. I know such software is useless, but it is a company policy so I need to keep it. Disabling it allowed me to complete the backup in a reasonable time frame.

I still get the logs in the console though, but it seems to not cause any harm.

Thanks! I'm not using Sophos Antivirus - instead i'm using Avira Antivir. I'll give it a try and deactivate Antivir, although with El Capitan + Antivir Time Machine backups have never been a problem.

Ok, after disabling Avira Antivirus the backup seems to work well again. Saved 40 GB in 1h.

Nevermind - it seems to have sorted itself out (although after a really long time). Thank you though!

Seems its Sophos... Had issue on Mac Mini and MacBook Pro... turned off on access scanning ing Sophos Preferences and now Time Machine is working without delay. Takes over a day with Sophos on!

if i have no antivirus software installed, what else might be causing the identical delay (and console messages) you speak of?

I have the same problem that I've Sophos Anti-virus installed. After reading above posts, I uninstalled it using the uninstaller Sophos comes with, rebooted the Macbook Pro, starts the Time Machine backup, and still the same, very slow with lots of messages in the console like yours
