iOS 10 will not air play without mirroring

I used to be able to air play from my iPhone 6 to my Apple TV with the sound only but since updating to iOS 10 this has changed. I don't particularly want my iPhone screen up on the telly when I am playing Pandora. But I can't find an option to turn off mirroring without also turning off the sound. Has the screen mirroring become compulsory or does anyone know if there is a hidden setting to turn screen mirroring off but still retaining the sending of the sound through Apple TV?

thanks

Hi Pixelwarrior,
Thanks for updating to iOS 10! I understand that after you updated, your iPhone is mirroring and Airplaying your Pandora app but you would just like to Airplay without seeing your iPhone 6 screen on your Apple TV. You can use your Control Center to Airplay just your music.

AirPlay content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Connect to the same Wi-Fi network on your iOS device and the device that you want to AirPlay to.
  2. On your iOS device, swipe up from the bottom of your screen to open Control Center.
  3. In Control Center, swipe horizontally to find the Now Playing screen.

  4. Select your AirPlay device:
    • On your iPad, from the list of available AirPlay devices, select the device that you want to AirPlay to.
    • On your iPhone or iPod touch, tap User uploaded file to find the list of available AirPlay devices, then select the device that you want to AirPlay to. Need help?

You're welcome! Glad I could provide assistance for you. Great thinking with toggling the device that you wish to Airplay to. You should not have to do so every time, but if you do, a backup and restore may resolve it.

Back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

Take care.

Okay, so this is a half fix to a still major issue. I've done what you said and it works on a app by app basis. If for instance I just want to stream audio to my Apple TV and happen to open my photo gallery, it will auto switch to airplay mirroring, no questions asked. When I leave the photos app it switches back to mirrorless but then that effectly means I cannot open my photos app while playing music without broadcasting the photos I am viewing to whomever is in eyeshot. 9/10 this isn't that big a deal for me personally, but this function could ruin someone else if they don't know better. This is not cool. Whatsoever. Bring back the original functionality please. It's like you went from version 1.0 to 0.5 instead of 2.0.

Hi JayB.,

Exactly same problem as Pixelmator with mi iPhone6 (10.1.1) but his "trick" didn't work for me. Even worse, now I'm not able even to mirror Music or Spotify to my 2nd Gen Apple TV (that used to work until today). The Airplay menu shows both the Apple TV and my Airport Express, but as soon as select one of them the audio plays back in the iPhone.

I do not have any of these problems with my MacBook Pro (10.12.1). I can stream music to both devices and I can mirror the screen on the Apple TV, so it's not a Wifi-configuration issue (all devices work over the same wifi network and all of them have Home Sharing active).

Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

I found where the problem is and the solution (a half fix actually) in this post: airplay disconnect ios 10 after 30 seconds.

It seems iOS 10 presents a conflict between Airplay and audio streaming to "made for iPhone" hearing devices (via bluetooth) even if they are not in use so the "solution" is to delete the hearing aids from the iPhone to be able to Airplay, since turning bluetooth off won't be enough. And later pair the hearing aids again once you finish Airplaying. So it's just one or the other! A real pain! I hope Apple fixes this in a near update.

iOS 10 will not air play without mirroring
