Dictionary Won't Find Definitions

Hi there,

Since installing Sierra, I have been experiencing some issues with the Dictionary app. I'll endeavor to explain this in the least difficult way possible. So, every time I try to make a quick dictionary-based search on Spotlight, Spotlight won't give me any results for English monolingual dictionaries. This means that if I only have the New Oxford American Dictionary and its corresponding Thesaurus, Spotlight doesn't find anything related to those dictionaries and will keep showing results of dictionaries I have disabled, which in this case is the bilingual Italian-English dictionary. Now, as much as I appreciate seeing dictionary entries being translated into my own mother tongue (Italian), I would also like to see monolingual dictionary entries on Spotlight, which I strongly need for my job. In short, I'm looking for something similar in view to what the contextual menu shows when you yellow-highlight a word while, for example, surfing on Safari. I have no problem with contextual menus as they show all dictionaries enabled in the preference pane of the Dictionary app. To sum up, it looks like that Spotlight doesn't recognize those two American dictionaries (I have also tried with a Dutch-English dictionary), and keeps finding definitions for the bilingual one. Is this happening to you too on Sierra? I would also like to add that as a countermeasure I have already done the following: deleted the com.apple.Spotlight.plist file from the user Library folder, re-indexed Spotlight, tried on a new user account to no avail, disabled the Definitions box in Spotlight preferences, moved up and down the enabled dictionaries on the small preference pane in Dictionary.

I appreciate your feedback,

Francesco

The issue I’ve been experience is parallel to this.

I depend upon the contextual dictionary quite a lot, and to see that it’s missing once upgraded to 10.12 is a bit troublesome — not because I can’t find how to remedy it (because I think I have), but that I needed to learn where to do this. Every time I write an odd word, I look it up to ensure I’m using it correctly. However, when I “Look Up” a word, I get a wikipedia article on a rock band or something unrelated, as the dictionary component was gone by default.

Only by reading this thread was I able to launch the Dictionary application — which immediately began downloading a copy of the New Oxford American Dictionary. I guess my next task is to find a more applicable dictionary (Canadian), and figure out how to install it.
