Q: Cannot print after upgrade to Sierra

After upgrading to macOS Sierra yesterday, I have been unable to print to my Canon Pixma MX892. The Canon website says there are no driver updates for this OS. When I try to print, I get a "filter failed" error and my printer spits out an empty sheet of paper.

Eventually, I am notified that cgpdftoraster has crashed.

Same issue here, but the info from the Canon knowledgebase worked for now. Seems to be a general issue with Sierra, because I found a similar thread on apple discussions regarding an Epson printer, instead of a Canon.

The strange thing is that some documents print right out of the box while others won't. Tested it with a PDF I've got via email (printed successfully) and an other, generated from my invoiceprogramm, which didn't work (also older invoices, which could printed successfully with El Capitan).

Hope the issue will be fixed soon.

I only get this when trying to print from MS Word. If I open the document with Pages it prints just fine.

I have a Pixma MG5140 and an HP 1220C. Neither will work after installing Sierra. I tried the Apple recommended work-around but this also failed with the error message "Printing - GenericClass: waiting for device". Currently, I have no method to print anything.

The workaround suggested by Canon is only good for single-page printing via TIFF. It's far easier to use Adobe Acrobat instead of Preview, and all works fine.

I found a better fix for the Canon printer filter error. (Canon's solution  did not work for me).

In system preferences open Printers & Scanners.

Control + click the printer in the left panel. This will erase the printers.

Then click the "+" symbol at the bottom of that same panel, and re-select your printer.

I used the type "secure air print".

As soon as I did that, the Filter error disappeared and the printer worked normally.

Only the most recent Canon printers support "air print". If yours does not (like mine), then using Acrobat seems the most viable workaround.

Canon Australia released an Air Print update for my MG 4160 on the 10 th October 2016. The update is marked Mac OS Sierra compatible. This update must be performed while the printer is attached via a usb cable from your computer. The update contained firmware updates which updated all printer functions. Printer now prints as normal. I hope this works in your case.

My printer is not an airprint version (MG6100) but I found an updated driver on the Canon site that was compatible for Sierra. Downloaded and installed and problem fixed.

Ok and how will we be notified of this?  Will you just push it as a system upgrade through the AppStore?

    Hello

I'm having the same problem, but with my Canon MB5060.

The error message is "cgpdftoraster quit unexpectantly."

I receive this message when I print PDFs and Microsoft Office documents.

Do you have a driver update for this?

    Many thanks

Your printer supports AirPrint - have you tried adding the printer using the AirPrint driver?
