problem when instaling mac sierra on imac

hello,

I have an imac 2010, yesterday i tried to install macOs Sierra and unfortunately i got a message that it can't be installed on my computer file system verify or repair failed.Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.

But when you restart you get to the same point.

I tried the first aid on disk utility on macintosh HD and i got the message the volume could not be verified completely.File system check exit code is 8.File system verify or repair failed.

Operation failed.

I dont have a back up on this volume.

Please help me, the computer was working great before the installation.

Try booting from recovery (hold command-R immediately after power) and run Disk Utility there to repair the drive.

Never do a major update without a backup.

I know i didn't do a backup just believing that it is not needed...

Will i now lose all my file?

You may be able to recover at least most of your files, but it seems that you will eventually have to reformat the drive. It is also possible that the problem occurred because the drive is failing (after 6 years it is a veryy likely possibility) and the big activity involved in the update pushed it over the edge.

If you have an external drive you may be able to boot from the external, and hopefully the files in the internal will be accessible so you can copy them.

Do you have access to another mac, at least temporarily? If so, you may also start your mac in Target Disk Mode and connect a Thunderbolt cable between them, and copy the files off.

Thank you Luis, i will give a try with the external drive.

Ok imac is 5-6 years old but Apple should not allowed to udpate if this can happen...

Hope that this will work, because it was working fantastic before the update

Updates are a common point of failure because of the amount of data that is copied/erased/moved around.

Sometimes it is just the straw that breaks the proverbial camel back.

If indeed the problem is one of an already sick hard drive being pushed too hard, there is nothing that Apple or anyone else can do. I am not saying that it is, but it has been known to happen.

It may be a good idea to make a backup of whatever data you can get.

If you have iCloud or dropbox, you may want to try and copy your most important files at the least.

There is a good chance your drive is damaged in a few sectors.
