Q: my imovie 10.1.2 takes hours to export a 12 minute video. Why so slow?

Using Imovie and trying to export a movie, it took about 4-5 hours for a 12 minute video. Any suggestions on how to improve the speed or cut down on the wait time??

Sharing (rendering) is a very processor and graphics-intensive process.  For a given duration movie the time taken to share depends on many factors, including the processor and graphics power of the mac you are using, the resolution of the video, the amount of titles, picture-in-picture transitions and effects that have been used, the video export quality settings and whether you are saving to Theater (which creates copies of the movie in several formats).

4-5 hours for a 12 min video does seem quite slow but if is in 4K and/or you are sharing to the high or best quality then it may be about what would be expected from a medium power mac like you have.

For a faster share, share to file without 'Add to Theater checked' and choose a lower resolution, quality and faster compression.
