Q: Photos scanning taking an age

My Macbook Pro 3.1GHz Intel Core i7 16GB 1867MHz DDR running MacOs looks like it will take 18 days to scan a 300GB photos library on my Lacie Thunderbolt Raid6 disk system. A long time me thinks, especially when at night I am dedicating all compute power to the task and have run the task for about 24 hours since upgrading and only around 3,000 images of 60,000 have been scanned so far... Anyone else think this is slow or know how to speed up said process.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12)

I think I'm experiencing a similar issue and I'm not sure if it should be attributed to the new Sierra features or not.

The library needed to be 'rebuilt' and it took 10-15 minutes for the progress bar to finish, allowing me to open Photos.

Now that i'm actually in the application, most thumbnails show an exclamation point in a triangle. They seem to load, so long as they're active in the window, but they don't seem to be loading if they're not immediately being viewed.

How long should this process take? Do I simply need to keep Photos running in the background all day long?

not sure if this if helpful for you, mike, but i just found this:

Fix missing or incorrect thumbnails in Photos - Apple Support

so i've done that 'fix' and the thumbnail issue is still an issue, so i'm basically having to go through my library of over 18k photos ONE-BY-ONE to correct it.

    this is beyond infuriating.

Photos scanning is slow (lots to do) and 60,000 photos =will take several days or weeks - I am about half way through 20,000 now - you can not speed it up but messing around can slow it down - just ignore it and let it run

It takes ages as it also scans all your videos and adds faces to those. The scan is also much improved - unfortunately I am now rapidly deleting multiple faces of various cartoon characters from my kids clothes

Don't repair the library until there is a fix. I did and it showed only 61 photos (they were all there just not visible). I had to restore back to El Capitan and restart.

So it took a week to scan in 60,000 photo's. When completed the people tab had incorporated all the photo's I had tagged faces with on previous versions of Photo. Unfortunately I then had to go in and tag further faces, as I think no new pictures of people got added to the faces I had already included. The improvement over previous version of photo's is that the app now recognises lots of very similar photo's as you confirm a face in a photo rather than having to tag faces individually. Unfortunately even though the app can pick out people in poor quality images correctly for some reason it misses out great portrait photo's which is strange. There is also no easy way to correct the applications guess and offer an alternative face the only option is Yes or No.
