vertical scroll click function in Mail

When I click on the vertical scroll bar in Mail the message list screen moves approximately one and a half messages past one page. This happens for moves up or down and makes it easy to miss messages. It makes no difference how many lines I set preferences to show in "list preview", and no matter what mouse I use.

In every other application the screen moves one page minus one line. What's wrong with (my) Mail.

My machine is a 27" iMac Retina 5K (Late 2015).

Hello AreDeeBee,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with Mail is not what you expect. The good news is the following steps will be helpful in resolving your issue and get your Mail working properly again.

1. Start by quitting Mail and then hold the Shift key on your keyboard and re-open Mail. This will temporarily prevent Mail from re-opening its documents and windows and then test the issue again.

Automatically re-open windows, apps, and documents on your Mac

2. You can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

Cheers!
