Q: iPhone 6 error 56 while updating/restoring OS

Hi,

So I have an iPhone 6 64 GB, I am getting "error 56" every time I try to update/restore iOS. It all started with 9.3.2 OS update, my phone was updating the OS over the air and it crashed out for some reason and was displaying the iTunes icon, asking to connect to iTunes. I tried updating it via iTunes and got the error 56, after numerous failed attempt, I found out that there is problem with 9.3.2 OS update and you need to remove the SIM tray while updating the OS, so I did that, it did not helped. Finally I downloaded the 9.3.1 OS and tried restoring my phone, I was able to update the 9.3.1 OS without the error. I did not updated the next version of OS but finally gave in to all the update pop ups and tried to update 9.3.5, again same error and after many many many failed attempts I was able to update 9.3.5.

After few weeks Apple released the iOS 10, I waited for few days and tried to update the OS and again same error "unknown error 56". After almost 100+ attempts I was able to restore my iPhone to 9.3.5 and my phone is working great no issue whatsoever.

At this point I am not sure that the issue is because apart from the OS updates my phone is perfect, no battery related issues, network, wifi, Bluetooth every thing is working flawlessly

NOTE - I tried different PC's brand, new Apple USB cables, made sure that I have a good and stable internet connection and that my iTunes is latest also I tried on a PC which had only iTunes installed on it nothing else basically everything that is recommended by Apple in below article.

    Greetings 256Hopi,

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities. From your post I understand that you have been having issues updating the iOS software on your iPhone 6 and have been getting the iTunes error 56. I have an iPhone 6 as well and I depend on being able to update the software once it is released. I will be happy to help you with this.

You are on the correct path by following the article, Get help with iOS update and restore errors. I know you have done some of the steps, but you'll want to make sure you follow each of the steps listed below:

    Check for hardware issues

If you see error 53, learn what to do. If you see one of the errors below, you might have a hardware issue:
    1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16
    20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 56
    1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667 1669
    Here's what to check:

    1. If iTunes is already open, quit and reopen it.
    2. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
    3. Check for issues with third-party security software.
    4. Make sure that your USB cable, computer, and network are reliable. Then try twice more to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
    5. If you still see the error message, you can check for outdated or modified software or contact Apple Support.

In order to update to iOS 10, you will need to have iTunes version 12.5.1 installed on your computer. Please reach back out after you have attempted all those above steps, if you still have issues.

    Have a great weekend.
