Q: Recovering Photos

Hi, I'm having some trouble as I recently updated my iPhone 5s to ios10. I had a select amount of photos stored on my phone and linked to icloud, so when I took a photo they'd download onto my MacBook and I could delete them off my phone, whilst keeping them on my MacBook.

However after the update a notification appeared giving me the option to optimise storage, I pressed this accidentally over ignore, and then all of my photos downloaded to my phone. Not seeing a problem after deleting some and then checking on my MacBook to make sure they were safe, I continued to delete all the ones that weren't on my phone previously.

This was about three days ago, but today when I went to check my photos all of them have been deleted and the contents of Photos is exactly the same as on my phone.

Is there any way I can recover them? I'd simply like to have it the way it was before, with my MacBook acting as a way to store photos I wanted to keep.

Thank you in advance

That's basically what iCloud's service entails, i.e. it's a syncing/mirroring service so when you upload all of your photos to the iCloud Photo Library, it populates to all of your devices making them easily and almost instantaneously accessible.  Delete it from one device, and it deletes from all devices.

On your iPhone, go to the Recently Deleted folder to see if the photos might be there.

I'm afraid they're not, and I did originally have it so Photos on my MacBook kept all images and just downloaded new ones to add in, it was only after the optimising storage option that I had a problem.

Try going to iCloud.com/Photos on a computer and check for a Recently Deleted album.
