Need to pair iPhone to Computer for Apple Pay?

I'm excited about using ApplePay via Safari with Sierra and iOS 10. However, I'm not sure how it will work without pairing my phone to my computer first, assuming that a bluetooth connection is necessary. I cannot and have never been able to pair the two. So, any clarification would be welcomed.

Hi curt,

I'm glad to see you are very happy about being able to use ApplePay in macOS Sierra. I can understand wanting to make sure everything gets set up correctly. I'll be happy to help with this.

You do not need to pair the iPhone and the Mac. You do however, need to make sure that Bluetooth is turned on, on both devices and signed into iCloud. Listed below are articles that have additional information regarding this.

Set up Apple Pay on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac

Using Apple Pay in stores, and within apps and websites

Pay on websites in Safari

With your iPhone, iPad, and Mac you can use Apple Pay to pay on websites in Safari.

With your iPhone or iPad

  1. Tap the Buy with Apple Pay or Apple Pay button.
  2. Check your billing, shipping, and contact information to make sure that they're correct. If you want to pay with a different card, tap > next to your card.
  3. If you need to, enter your billing, shipping, and contact information. Apple Pay will store that information so you won't need to enter it again.
  4. When you’re ready, make your purchase and place your finger on Touch ID. After your payment information sends successfully, you’ll see Done and a checkmark on the screen.

With your Mac

  1. Make sure that you're signed in to the same iCloud account on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. Also, make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your Mac.
  2. Tap the Buy with Apple Pay or Apple Pay button.
  3. Check your billing, shipping, and contact information to make sure that they're correct. To pay with a different card instead of your default card, click next to your default card and select the card you want to use. You can choose credit and debit cards from any iPhone or Apple Watch that is nearby and signed into the same iCloud account.
  4. If you need to, enter your billing, shipping, and contact information. Apple Pay will store that information on your iPhone, so you won't need to enter it again.
  5. When you're ready, make your purchase. On your iPhone, place your finger on Touch ID or double-click the side button on your Apple Watch. After your payment information sends successfully, you'll see Done and a checkmark on the screen.
