Do People in the Photos app sync?

Are people in the Photos app supposed to sync between macOS and iOS? Is this a broken feature or not supported? Someone please tell me that Apple does not expect me to organize People over and over again on all my devices? That would be pretty ridiculous. I've never used the Faces feature in previous versions for that very reason.

Unfortunately not.

The Photos Help has just been updated for Sierra, and we finally have it in writing:

https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.2/?lang=en#/phtf5e48489c

Note: People identified in the People album are not synced across devices.

And as far as I can tell, it really does not sync between my Photos Libraries on the MacBook Pros and my iMac.

This is different in the iOS 10 user guide for the iPhone and iPad:

http://help.apple.com/iphone/10/#/iph9c7ee918c

People are synced among devices where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID.

I cannot test on the iOS devices, because only my iPhone can be updated to iOS 10, not the iPad and iPod touch, but the iPhone does not sync the Persons with my Mac.

Wow, what an absolute waste of a feature. Who is seriously going to name hundreds of faces across thousands of photos on each device! I guess this is designed for iPhone users only. I've waited for Photos to mature since Aperture was killed and it just seems they have no intention of putting real resources behind Mac apps. What a huge disappointment. I had toyed with the idea of going with Google photos but now I will have to seriously consider it. I've already ditched iTunes for Plex and have no regrets.

I have four Macs and one iPhone to sync. I gave up waiting for syncing of faces to be introduced and reverted to using keywords. After I named a person on one of my Macs I assigned a keyword with the name to all photos of the person. This keyword will sync an be visible in the Info panel and can reused n sort albums and searches.

Wow, what an absolute waste of a feature.

In several discussions here it has been suggested that Apple is not syncing People's names to iCloud because of privacy reasons. If this is really a legal problem we'll have to wait for this problem to be resolved bin court before we can see any improvement to this feature.

BTW - the sync across iOS devices doesn't work either, in spite of the iOS help file saying it does. I use iCloud Photo for all my devices, and after organizing all of the people on my iPad, nothing shows on my iPhone. The iPhone rescans everything from scratch and then you can reorganize.

I agree w/ the other poster. Waste of a feature. Thousands of pics on 5 devices...yeah, I'm going to sit there on every one and identify people.

My hunch is Apple is going to say the lack of syncing is for privacy reasons. All the face and object processing is done on the device only. I appreciate Apple looking out for me but this does not make my life easier. The whole point of a cloud based library is to have the same library everywhere, thats the dream right? I guess if we want to stick with Photos it's going to remain a dream 🙂

According to: http://help.apple.com/iphone/10/#/iph9c7ee918c

"Photos scans your photo library for people’s faces and adds the most frequently found faces to the People album. You can assign names to the people Photos finds, add people who appear less frequently, mark people as favorites, and view memories that contain specific people. The more photos you have, the longer the first scan takes."

" People are synced among devices where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID."

Right - that is previously quoted in this thread however so far no one has actually seen that occur - in fact everyone sees that it does not occur

I have three IOS devices and two Macs signed into ICPL with the same Apple ID and memories appera to sync, photos and albums sync but people and people albums do not no matter what the documentation says

Can you verify that you have personally seen this sync occur?

For personal use, I have 3 mac's, iPhone and a ipad all on same apple id. People are syncing across iOS devices and NOT to macs... People names I have added do not sync at all. Also, at the bottom of each people album there is a link that offers to find more pics of the same person. This works less the half as well as the old way of doing things. Hopefully things will improve with time. The problem is that anything we are doing now will probably help to really screw things up if and when this does start working... I am going to stop touching this until it works (someday)...

I opened a case with Apple last night and after the tech conferred with his fellow techs he came back and told me the People feature does not sync. The functionality is not there. He said I would have to add and match the people separately on all my devices. He had no idea if the functionality would be added in the future. I only have one iOS device so I don't know about iOS to iOS device syncing. After the call I went straight to apple.com/feedback and let them know how frustrated I was.

I have another sync issue with this new Photos app on iOS 10. After organizing People folders on my iPad (Adding, Merging, Selecing, Hiding, etc), I realized that after syncing my device with my Mac the iPad goes back to its initial selection of faces and does not keep your last reorganization. Same with the iPhone. I tried a couple of times and the issue remains.

Are you using iTunes Photo Sync? Then with every sync all photos on the iPad will be replaced by the photos from the new sync. And you will have to start over with naming people.
