Do People in the Photos app sync?

Are people in the Photos app supposed to sync between macOS and iOS? Is this a broken feature or not supported? Someone please tell me that Apple does not expect me to organize People over and over again on all my devices? That would be pretty ridiculous. I've never used the Faces feature in previous versions for that very reason.

? Also it is not really a new sync as I did not upload any new photos on my Mac between the various synchronization but it is still "disorganizing" the Photos app on the iPad each time.

When you use iTunes Photo Sync to sync your iPad it is a one-way transfer. Nothing you did in Photos on the iPad will sync back to the Mac. The Camera Roll on the iPad and what you saves to the Camera Roll will stay on the iPad, but all photos you synced previously with iTunes to the iPad will be replaced by the currently selected photos.

There is no perfect way to sync the iPad with the Mac right now.

  • With iCloud Photo Library all edits will sync, but not the People albums, and we are risking that the albums on other synced devices will be messed up, by the bug that is killing albums and folders.
  • With iTunes Photo Sync the syncing is only one way, from the Mac to the iPad. we cannot get the edits and albums created on the iPad back to the Mac. But we can sync a selection of albums and photos to the iPad.

Pick the lesser evil - I switched to iTunes Photo Sync, because I do not want all photos on the iPad, just a selection, but in full resolution. I do not use the iPad for photo editing any longer anyway, since iPhoto has been discontinued on the iPad.

! Can't you at least explain us WHY and WHAT kind of legal issues are there?!?

You will have to ask Apple and not you fellow users here. But I just found a kind of explanation on the iOS 10 page: http://www.apple.com/ios/ios-10/

Your info. Safe and secure.

Your privacy always comes first. That’s why iOS 10 uses on-device intelligence to identify the people, objects, and scenes in Photos, and power QuickType suggestions. And when you do share sensitive data with Apple for services like Siri and Maps, it’s always encrypted and never used to build user profiles.

This explains why all object and face recognition is done locally on the device again and not synced: "That’s why iOS 10 uses on-device intelligence to identify the people, objects, and scenes in Photos"

.

I only usually see changes being made by the Google team unfortunately...

Well most people see lots of improvements made by Apple - Photos has come a long, long way since 1.0 and continues to add more and more new features in High Sierra including syncing faces - macOS High Sierra Preview - Apple - So I guess you have tunnel vision since you do not see all of these many imporvements

The People album gets even better with faces.

Easily find your favorite subjects in the People album with larger image thumbnails and more accurate groupings. And when you use iCloud Photo Library, your album stays up to date on all your devices.

Unfortunately, however, none of those 3 devices sync the People information.

The next system versions - currently tested will bring this capability.

They will, once macOS 10.13 High Sierra and iOS 11 will be released for the general public.

It has been announced at the WWDC, see: macOS High Sierra Preview - Apple

Sorry, now I can see Larry posted this already two weeks ago!

People do not sync across devices. Using the posted link, the following statement is near the top of the page: "Note: People identified in the People album aren’t synced across devices. The People feature isn’t available on iPhone 5."

Yes, Apple updated the user Guide to say "Note: People identified in the People album aren’t synced across devices" instead of updating the software to make the syncing work.

I did do this though. I think a lot of people with the rants were also initially looking for technical support to see if there was a setting or something that had to be 'turned on.' But ultimately, it's your choice to waste your own time smashing that reply to be pretty negative in most of your replies on this thread towards commenters and to tell them to leave feedback and assume that they didn't either. Anyway, for both Apple and Google Apps, I leave feedback. I only usually see changes being made by the Google team unfortunately...

It has been intentional, Bennorocks. Many people have been otragedbecause they do not want photos of themselves stored in iCloud, tagged with names by someone, without knowing about it. This is huge privacy concern. SO it is not only a technical problem but a legal issue, that could become expensive. I'm really glad that Apple listened to the users and the next versions of iOS and macOS will make the Faces feature usable with iCloud.

Apple Team ....

While it is helpful to include this in the guide:

"Note: People identified in the People album aren’t synced across devices."

What would be help is to know when this will be fixed. If it is not going to get fixed, then we (people who use the Mac, iPad, and iPhone) need to know so we can find a different photo application that will work.

Are there any plans to fix this?

1 - "Apple Team" is not here - this is a user to user forum for experienced users to help other users - it is NOT a way to comunicate with Apple

2 - as posted this was never broken - until High Sierra it was not a feature of Photos and now it is if you are up to date with High Sierra and IOS 11

People only sync if you have High Sierra on your Mac and IOS 11 on your IOS devices as documented in this thread

3 - use of Photos is totally optional and you are free to use any photo application that you want
