Cannot read external harddisk

I have an external harddisk (VERBATIM), which I use to transfer files from my MacBook (MacBook Pro, Mid 2012, updated to macOS Sierra 10.12) to a windows computer. This used to work fine previously, but now I can't see the harddisk on my MacBook anymore. The disk utility tells me that it is there, but that it cannot be read. However, the Windows machine can read it without problems. It is formatted FAT32 in order to be read by both systems.
