MacOS Sierra - time machine stuck preparing backup on Network devices

Since I updated to macOS Sierra, can only use my local USB drive to backup. TimeMachine is stuck with the "preparing backup" message - over 12 hours - for network devices, an Apple FileVault and another NAS device. Works fine with local USB drive.

Something funny going on with network devices as it's working for local discs.

Hope Apple take note and fix.

The spotlight step can take quite a long time depending on the size of the disk

Fix Time Machine when stuck on “Preparing backup...”

Time Machine is the simplest way to keep regular backups of a Mac. On some rare occasions though, Time Machine may get stuck on the "Preparing backup…" stage for an inordinately long amount of time, causing a backup to never start. So lets fix this specific Time Machine issue.

The first thing you need to do is cease the currently failed backup attempt:

• Open System Preferences from the Apple menu and click "Time Machine"
• Click the ✖ icon on the right side of the progress bar to stop the backup attempt

When the progress bar disappears and it no longer says "Preparing backup…" you're good to begin the troubleshooting process.

• Open the Time Machine drive in the Finder and navigate to the "Backups.backupd" folder
• Open the folder within Backups.backupd that is the name of the current Mac which is stuck on preparing
• Put this directory into "List View" and sort by ‘Date Modified', or just search the folder for a file with a ".inProgress" file extension
• Delete the "xxxx-xx-xx-xxxxxx.inProgress" file. The .inProgress file is always in the form of xxxx-xx-xx-xxxxxx.inProgress, where the first 8 digits are the year-month-day (date) and the next 6 or so digits are random numbers, followed by the inProgress file extension.
• Restart your Mac
• Once rebooted, let Spotlight run completely (you can either just wait it out or watch the mdworker, mrs, and related processes in Activity Monitor). This should cause OS X to re-index the attached Time Machine drive if it's needed, which may be getting in the way of Time Machine backing up properly thus causing the computer to get stuck on "Preparing backup..." for a very long time.
• Start a back up yourself. Pull down the Time Machine icon and choose "Back Up Now". You will still see a "Preparing backup…" message but it should be gone within a few minutes, depending on the size of the hard drive, the speed of the Mac, and the size of the backup to be made. At this point, your Time Machine backup will proceed as expected, so just let it run and you're good to go again.

I have the same problem. I found this,

macOS Sierra problems: Time Machine won't back up Mac

Time Machine problems have been preventing Mac owners from backing up their devices since upgrading to macOS Sierra, and the problem is widespread enough that Apple has released a guide on what to do if you can't back up:

SMC Reset for the iMac

1. Shut down the device

2. Disconnect the power cord from the monitor

3. Wait 60 seconds

4. Reconnect power cord

5. DO NOT POWER UP DEVICE

PRAM Reset

1. The computer should still be shut down.

2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

3. Press and release the power button to turn on the computer.

4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears. Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the 3rd time.

5. Release the keys.

You can then try backing up again. If that doesn't work, try turning off indexing on the drive you're backing up.

but i am not sure it is the same issue. I will try it and report back.

hi, Thanks for the tip.

I tried this but it hasn't solved the problem. TM works ok on local devices. I have noticed that the remote network device needs TM does not even get mounted and therefore the backup sparse bundle does not even get 'touched'. If I mount the drive where the bundle is manually, TM still does not mount it.

Cheers

Paul

After I had this issue for nearly 4 hours I got it to finally back up from time machine I don't know if it will help others .. I moved the old back up from el captain probably work for any os . Transferred them files to a new partiton or place delete the old copy os el captain in my case, you can keep you old os in different place... And then set it back up to back up the new os in the original place you normally back up.. For some reason the os x sierra gets confused with backing up with old existing os.

My upgrade from El Capitan to macOS Sierra worked like charm in relation to TM backups - iMac continues to backup to 3TB TC over network with 2 routers.

If stuck on preparing a backup try connecting to you TC in Finder, then open TC in mounted devices and locate file that says in progress, restart MAC and TC and main router.

Hi

Just let everybody know, tried a couple of things, changing the exclusion list as suggested, did not seem to do the trick. I am running sophos Home, so turned that off and at first did not seem to work, then after about 3 or four hours i got a message saying i was already connected to the TM, I rebooted, fired of the backup again and now its working like a charm. Sophos home is still switched off, will run back up for a few days to make sure it is running constantly then switch sophos back on and see if that stops it again. If it does will bang on the doors of Sophos and see if they have a fix. Will let people know here

just to update, TM is now working, the crucial item is I also turned off Sophos scanning. I've had inconsistent behaviour across devices though as TM worked ok with Sophos on to local USB attached drives, and also one time for network Time Capsule. My other NAS drive only worked when Sophos was turned off. All backups did add files to the existing backup, except TC which decided to erase the older backup bundle. Not really sure of the common factor.

We wait for some updates from various vendors I guess (e.g. Sophos, GPGmail add in to Mail doesn't work, neither does Rapport).
