Sep 27, 2016 7:52 AM in response to Csound1by pvarman,Interesting - I know MS Windows is more a target than OSX for viruses, but without them what protection does Apple provide in case one is targetted?

Sep 27, 2016 8:08 AM in response to pvarmanby Csound1,OSX contains it's own protection, and there are no viruses for OS X in existence. You don't need them and both are known troublemakers (especially Trusteer)

Sep 27, 2016 8:18 AM in response to pvarmanby dr Freon,I experience this with both USB-drive and TimeMachine NAS (Synology DSj216). Have never had any issues before upgrading.

Sep 28, 2016 1:30 AM in response to pvarmanby thatmrkeithy,Been reading a few comments on here. First off, you need anti virus on a Mac, anybody who says different has no idea what they are talking about. I see two or three infections a month on Macs at work. There are viruses for OSX and no macs don't have built in protection for these. Gone are the days when people say macs don't get viruses, they do. Secondly, I have been using sophos for years and never had problem on a mac. I have never heard of them been "trouble makers". Granted the problem is connected to antivirus, but we are early adopters of a new OS and things like this happen. It is more than likely apple has changed something and the antivirus companies have not caught up. I have had issues like this every time a new OS is release, last time citrix stop working. Its part of the course, but please don't tell people they don't need anti virus on Macs, because it is simply not true anymore sadly.

Sep 28, 2016 4:51 AM in response to thatmrkeithyby Csound1,Only the gullible need Anti Virus, there are no viruses for OS X, those who believe there are are fooling themselves and doing a great disservice to others.
But carry on while we ignore you.

Sep 28, 2016 5:17 AM in response to Csound1by dr Freon,Actually this is supposed to work just fine and just the same way. The thing can be resolved easily as it seems and you're not very helpful. I suggest you take your pretty arrogant comments elsewhere.

Ok so what was MACDefender or Thunderstrike 2 viruses last year, a figment of everybody's imagination? The raise of mac malware is the stuff of myth and legend is it? Seriously the only person doing a disservice is you. Why it is less lightly macs can get infected over windows, it is by no means impossible.
Apple do build some protection into OSX or Mac OS, but it is not 100%. This is taken from apples website
(/macosx/security): 'no system can be 100 percent immune from every threat, antivirus software may offer additional protection'
It is also worth noting that there are number of emails sending out virus targeting windows computers which mac antivirus stops so that you don't pass it on. I am not sure what your basing your information on, but it is incorrect.
On another note, i spoke with sophos this morning, they are aware of the problem, and working on a fix, they did say try putting the backup device into exemptions. I did this, and it did not work for me, but several people have said it did.

Sep 28, 2016 7:29 AM in response to Csound1by thatmrkeithy,I am sorry but you are not answering the question, if you are going post on forums and make statements about macs not getting antivirus and claim that I am being gullible, I would appreciate you backing that up, so I again ask the question what was MacDefender and Thunderstike 2 if not viruses or are you unaware of these?
Also for the record I am IT admin of 18 years with experience in both windows and Mac infrastructure and software support. I would also again ask you what you basing your knowledge on?

Sep 28, 2016 7:36 AM in response to thatmrkeithyby Csound1,I am not impressed, but do go on.
While you are doing that I will remind people NOT to use Anti-Virus software on Macs.

Sep 28, 2016 8:48 AM in response to Csound1by thatmrkeithy,I am not asking you to be impressed, I am simply asking you to state what you are basing your info on and what your opinion was on the MacDefender and Thunderstike 2 was. They were both covered a lot in the press and security bulletins last year, thats all. Your refusal to answer kind of speaks for its self. I don't think you like being challenged, and I am sorry for that. You seem to help a lot of people on here, but my experience contradicts your statements about viruses on Macs.
People google it, see what apple say, or go to your local apple store and see what they say, or read this http://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac/best-mac-antivirus-2016-sept-3637103/

Sep 28, 2016 8:58 AM in response to thatmrkeithyby Csound1,Think what like, speculation (while not allowed here) is your right.
Mac Defender is an application not a virus and Thunderstike (as you would have it) is not a virus and not an issue.
Now go and speculate some more, but try to remember that Anti Virus software on a Mac causes more problems than it pretends to solve.

Sep 28, 2016 9:34 AM in response to kidmarineby jefcoachbb94,My time machine was stuck on "Cleaning old backups" for almost a day. Once I stopped Sophos in less then 5 minutes the cleanup completed. Sophos was also preventing Disk Utilities First Aid from running on my external disks.
