Q: MacOS Sierra - time machine stuck preparing backup on Network devices

Since I updated to macOS Sierra, can only use my local USB drive to backup. TimeMachine is stuck with the "preparing backup" message - over 12 hours - for network devices, an Apple FileVault and another NAS device. Works fine with local USB drive.

Something funny going on with network devices as it's working for local discs.

Hope Apple take note and fix.

    Hi Ncdancer

Yeah I can see how its confusing, but it covers Sophos home as well, the update should be out around the Oct 25th. For your info the antivirus engine sophos home uses is same as all there other mac products which is version 9.5.2. All little confusing I know, but to cut a long story short, all in theory should be good by the end of the month.

Thanks, I figured it out, I do have 9.5.2

I went to the applications and got info on the actual app and not the little pull down I posted earlier.

It's a good news. Thank you for positing the link.

I am wondering what "hang" in

Time Machine backups may take a longer time, or hang when using SAV for OS X 9.5.2.

really means. If "hang" is simply "longer time" or "preparing..."

The "endless preparing" (the subject here) can occur irrespective of on-access scanner ON/OFF. On the other hand, The backup speed can be normal by turning off on-access scanner.

I noted that upon first launch of MacOS Sierra after an upgrade from El Capitan, the OS immediately kicks into overdrive doing one or both of the following simultaneously: (1) indexing your hard drives to facilitate quick Spotlight (which is standard behaviour post MacOS upgrade ever since they introduced Spotlight); (2) indexes your pictures (all of them!) in Photos to facilitate the latest Search function in Photos which allows you to search your photos using simple words like "beach" where it will display all pictures with a beach or anything related to it in it. Running Time Machine during this indexing is not effective as the processor is stressed and the hard drive is carrying out massive read/writes. There seems no way to disable these indexes (even if you do they startup again); the best fix is to allow it to finish. If your Photos contains a massive library then pick a nice night and leave your Mac running overnight. Hope this helps...
