Q: iOS 10 Black Screen Spinning Wheel

Been using iOS 10.0.1 for about a week on an iPhone 6 and it's buggy. The issues below have only occurred since upgrading to iOS 10. Please fix in next release or provide solution.

1. Random black screen with spinning wheel. The upgrade went fine, so not that black screen. But at least daily my phone becomes unresponsive and shows a black screen with spinning wheel. After 5-10 seconds I'm prompted to enter my passcode as if the device has restarted. I'm not the only person experiencing this - and even managed to capture the image below.

2 - I've enabled the 'rest finger to open' option under home screen accessibility, but this doesn't always work. Again, about once a day, resting my finger to open results in me being prompted to press the home button to unlock. Each time this has happened I've checked and confirmed that the 'rest finger to open' option was enabled.

So I called Apple support and as above was advised the solution is a factory reset, but then to use my iPhone for a day or two to see if the issue repeats itself BEFORE I restore from my backup. For those of you who tried the factory reset option, did any of you then restore from a backup?  And if so, did the issue repeat before or after you restored from the backup?  Or did the issue repeat without restoring from a backup?

My phone was brand new out of box, it would make no sense that a factory reset would make any difference for me as mine was brand spankin' new...

Having same issue on iPhone 6 / iOS10.0.2. Upgrade went fine, but this issue appears regularly.

Posting this after catching it for the 3rd time today. It's annoying.

So after refusing to go down the factory reset option I've got a case open with Apple. I've provided them my sysdiagnose logs (from immediately after a black screen) so they can start to look at what's causing the problem.  Will keep you posted if I hear anything positive - even acknowledgement on their part would be a start!

Also, if you're experiencing this issue please call Apple support and open a case with them. At the moment, they think a factory reset is the solution and think that works every time.

Same problem here. So disappointing. And I can't restore my iPhone because the screen is black! And the Find My iPhone feature stops you from being able to do a restore. I managed to get it into recovery mode and it recognises that there is a problem with the iPhone and updates the software but that doesn't help.

I think this will be the last iPhone I own!

same here, iPhone6, ios10.0.2, not good! especially when i rely on my phone for paying for things and at the checkout yesterday this happened!  Had to wait for it to come back to life, with some odd looks from the cashier.

Upgraded from 6s to 7+ with a backup and restore.  Phone was reinstalling apps from the cloud and it started running slow.  I tapped messages and it froze and then went to this screen and got stuck.

What's weird is my 6s had 10.0.2 but the 7+, despite being backed up from that phone, is running 10.0.1

This is becoming a real pain in the butt.  I'll try to re-open a case tonight with Apple as well.

Also having this issue, and I'm replying hoping it will raise the awareness of the issue to Apple.  In addition to the black screen with the loading icon, I'm also seeing the phone app become unresponsive and I'm having to manually close it and reopen to be able to make calls.  If a smart phone can't operate as a phone, and it crashes when you use it as a computer, it's really just an expensive paperweight you are carrying around!

Same issue. I was downloading an app. It got stuck in an "installing" status on the home screen. I tried to open another app but the phone was unresponsive. Then I got the black screen with the spinning wheel. This is a new iPhone 7 fresh out the box. I tried the normal power/home button for 30 seconds combo, but still nothing. I opened a support chat with apple, sent her the link to this topic and said help. She had my hold the power button and down volume for 10 seconds. I let go and the phone rebooted. Man i hope this gets fixed soon.

I've had this on my 6 since 10.0.2, very frustrating.
