Q: iOS 10 Black Screen Spinning Wheel

Been using iOS 10.0.1 for about a week on an iPhone 6 and it's buggy. The issues below have only occurred since upgrading to iOS 10. Please fix in next release or provide solution.

1. Random black screen with spinning wheel. The upgrade went fine, so not that black screen. But at least daily my phone becomes unresponsive and shows a black screen with spinning wheel. After 5-10 seconds I'm prompted to enter my passcode as if the device has restarted. I'm not the only person experiencing this - and even managed to capture the image below.

2 - I've enabled the 'rest finger to open' option under home screen accessibility, but this doesn't always work. Again, about once a day, resting my finger to open results in me being prompted to press the home button to unlock. Each time this has happened I've checked and confirmed that the 'rest finger to open' option was enabled.

I'm under the impression that for me the situation improved a lot since I disabled the "Rest Finger to Open" option. Might be wishful thinking, but if you enabled this as well you could give it a shot...

Seems like it's getting worse: cought the black screen around 8 times today. Can't figure out the case when/why this repeats.

Noticed that all info-widget got restarted (shown with no content) after unlocking the screen after the black sreen. Similar like after restarting the device.

Hi folks! I believe I may have a solution to our problem of the black screen with the spinning circle.

I've stumbled upon this post today because my brand new iPhone 7 (which I have upgraded to the latest ios) also got stuck on a black screen with the spinning circle. I was trying to update some of my apps, when the screen suddenly froze. I clicked the home button once, and the screen became black with the subsequent appearance of the spinning circle.

I tried everything - pressed simultaneously the home and power button (did not work); connected it to itunes to do a restore (it won't let me because my "Find my iPhone" was turned on - but I couldn't turn it off because my phone was unresponsive).

Anyway, a very helpful Mr. Damon (a senior advisor from Apple) helped me via chat to resolve the problem.

    Here's what I did:

    1. Make sure your iPhone is unplugged from the socket or the computer.

    2. Hold down the POWER button plus the VOLUME DOWN button SIMULTANEOUSLY. If it works, the screen should power off almost immediately.

    3. Connect your iPhone to the computer. (when I connected to the computer, my iPhone automatically turned on and was ready to be used again).

The subsequent steps below are for those whose iPhones did not turn on with the above steps. The following steps are designed for you to be able to remotely turn off your "Find my iPhone", so you can do a manual restore from iTunes.

    4. Go to www.icloud.com.

    5. Click Find iPhone

    6. Since the phone is powered off already, it won't be able to locate it. Click DEVICES on the upper bar.

    7. Click your iPhone.

    8. Click "remove from account".

    9. Go to your itunes, and do a restore.

I did not have to do steps 4-9 anymore, because as I have mentioned, my iPhone automatically turned on after step 3.

This really worked for me. Hope it works for everyone else too! Have a great day!

It doesn't sound like you have the same issue, I don't get stuck with that screen, it just happens regularly and only lasts a few seconds each time.

I updated an iPhone 5c to iOS 10 a week ago.

Today, I updated a couple of Apps. The download started and shortly afterwards my Home screen froze.

I was unable to do a hard reset by pressing the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons simultaneously because the Sleep/Wake button had failed after the iOS 9 update (I was hoping the iOS 10 update would fix it).

I have discovered that Apple have an iPhone 5 Sleep/Wake Button Failure Project (https://www.apple.com/uk/support/iphone5-sleepwakebutton/) but that the Serial Number of my iPhone 5c does not qualify for the free button repair (over 3 years old?).

Now, I am left with a black screen and spinning wheel and no apparent means of getting out of this situation as nothing works.

I tried connecting to iTunes but was unable to change the situation.

At the moment, I am leaving it alone for the battery to run down to see if that will clear the problem and if it will recover when I put it on charge.

It would appear therefore, that my iPhone 5c has suffered 2 failures as a result of iOS updates.

This is not good enough and I am most unhappy with the situation.

    Thank you Regina_M.

My iPhone 6Plus was playing music from iTunes, when I went to update several apps.

The screen was unresponsive as it froze between screens.

After 4 - 5 minutes the screen went Black with white spinning wheel.

Was trying holding Power button, nothing happened, kept spinning.

Tried pressing the button at bottom of screen, no response, kept spinning.

Found your instruction steps but it took almost 1 full minute before it shut down completely.

Then the Apple start symbol came up and took about 3 - 5 minutes before my screen came back up fully.

    Thank you!

OK - the problem is fixed (at least for the moment!)

I left my iPhone 5c with the black screen and the spinning wheel running until the battery went flat.

I then plugged it into a mains charger and left it alone.

After about 5 minutes I got a sound signal from the phone, pressed the Home button and the Home screen came up with my Apps.

Still to be tested out fully but it looks OK although my Sleep/Wake button still doesn't work.

I raised a case with Apple Support and have informed them of the situation and that I think it is an iOS 10.0.2 bug.

Support have recommended that I get the Sleep/Wake button fixed and that this is a hardware and not a software issue. They have advised a local repair shop where this can be done.

I did this also and haven't seen the spinner for many days now.

Go to settings  - general - accessibility - home button -  "rest finger to open "and enable it.

    Thanks .. Dave

This helped me out with my brand new iPhone7+. I hit the black screen of death upon doing a restore from iCloud, plus downloading all my apps. THANK YOU!

I tried this, and after a  going a whole day without the black screen, I think I can confirm that it works. Thanks!

Agreed, there is no real (known) workaround to this issue - this is a core OS issue and does appear to be linked to TouchId as it's usually when I press my finger on the touched that it repro's.  Also, when it fails it locks the screen and forces a re-sign in with a pin OR TouchID which usually works.

Anyone from apple work on these forums or is this their "Strong Silent Type" response to issues like this?  It's my very first experience with an apple product and I definitely see the "We know better" attitude in the iOS, but the "ego" aside, this is just a bug that needs to be addressed IMO.  I'm hoping the ego that is prevalent in iOS isn't also prevalent in the support of these forums.

Unfortunately it was indeed wishful thinking. Disabling the "Rest Finger to Open" option didn't do the trick, the problem still persists...
