Q: iOS 10 Black Screen Spinning Wheel

Been using iOS 10.0.1 for about a week on an iPhone 6 and it's buggy. The issues below have only occurred since upgrading to iOS 10. Please fix in next release or provide solution.

1. Random black screen with spinning wheel. The upgrade went fine, so not that black screen. But at least daily my phone becomes unresponsive and shows a black screen with spinning wheel. After 5-10 seconds I'm prompted to enter my passcode as if the device has restarted. I'm not the only person experiencing this - and even managed to capture the image below.

2 - I've enabled the 'rest finger to open' option under home screen accessibility, but this doesn't always work. Again, about once a day, resting my finger to open results in me being prompted to press the home button to unlock. Each time this has happened I've checked and confirmed that the 'rest finger to open' option was enabled.

I use Outlook app as well and been seeing this behavior almost every hour since upgrade. Perhaps it would be helpful if we take a poll how many use outlook to see if that's causing the issue?

I use Outlook app also having this issue on iPhone 6. Not sure if it has anything to do with Outlook though.

iOS 9 has been fine for me.

I think it's a general memory leak problem with the OS.  I don't use outlook and both times it happened to me I was attempting to use/open system apps.  I hasn't happened for almost a week now but the phone has frozen a few times for about 30 seconds

Yesterday I uninstalled the Outlook app due to the fact that I started to suspect it might cause this behaviour, too. It regularly happened when I was using the app, up to the point where it's almost reproducible. Since it also runs in the background, random crashes when I was using other apps (and also when the phone was locked and just lying on the table) could therefore be linked to Outlook from my point of view. A general memory leak could also be an explanation, of course. But then it should affect all iOS 10 users, shouldn't it?

However, I'm only referring to the first problem the OP mentioned: sudden black screen with white spinning wheel and after approximately 10 seconds the "Touch ID or Enter Passcode" screen. Some people here seem to have a somewhat different issue...

Yes I have exact same issue. Happens both on iPhone 6 amd iPhone 7. Black screen for a few seconds with a spinning wheel. Then reverts to lock screen and loses whatever I was working on (like a memory dump). all my coworkers have same issue. I feel like it is the outlook app but not certain.

Just to update from our end. I updated my wife's iPhone 6 (reg) to 10.0.2 and she hasn't had the spinning wheel issue anymore. That being said, it's clear that's not the fix for everyone since so many of you still have it despite the upgrade (and maybe it'll still come back for us ??).

She does not and did not have Outlook installed on the phone, and has very few 3rd party apps except for maybe facebook and some fitness stuff, and a couple games when the kids get bored. So while that may be the issue for some, it's clearly not the only thing causing it. The trouble runs deeper...

I see apple recommended this as a solution, unfortunately it is not a solution Apple.

Crud my reply didn't nest under the post it was intended for.  Bottom line is the solution Apple recommended on this thread is not a solution and won't get rid of the problem.

mmansour's supposed fix does not work for me.

This has happened to me 10-15 times TODAY...how is there not an update from Apple that addresses the issue?

Outlook seems to have been the culprit for me.  I removed it and went back to stock Mail.  The issue, which was spinning wheel then lock screen occurring 10-20 times per day, disappeared immediately.

I also have Outlook installed on my phone and iPad.  This condition happens on both devices.  I'm going to remove it from my phone to see if this helps

I Have outlook installed as well.  So frustrating as I had NO issues on iOS 9.  It seems stability was traded for XL emojis in the messaging app.  Less than impressed.

So I think it is possible that Outlook increases the likelihood/prevalence of these crashes and spinner problems, but the problem is definitely deeper in iOS since folks who have never installed Outlook are also seeing this. Also, the worst an app being unreliable should be able to do is crash itself, not the entire shell of the OS.

TL;DR: iOS has a nasty memory management / sandboxing problem that Outlook (& maybe other apps too) makes really obvious.
