An error occurred while communicating with the scanner. (-9923) Epson XP-760

I received the above message only after updating to Sierra. Image capture worked fine previously but now I can't use it! I have gone to the Epson support website and they say that my printer/scanner is compatible with Sierra, is there an updated driver that hasn't come from Apple yet (Epson drivers come through as part of the Apple update process!)

Any suggestions please.

I have an Epson NX515, am running OS10.13.2, and was having the same error message using Image Capture. I looked to see if there was an update for the printer driver, following instructions on Epson's website https://epson.com/Support/Printers/All-In-Ones/Epson-Stylus-Series/Epson-Stylus- NX515/s/SPT_C11CA48231?review-filter=mac…

When I added the Bonjour version of the Epson to the list of printers, per their instructions, I still got the error message. However, after I removed that printer and added the (IP) version, instead, Image Capture worked OK.

Found a fix. I'm running OS 10.12.6

Go to > http://tech.epson.com.au/downloads/
Select your Printer/Scanner in the righthand column then on the next page select your operating system (Mac OSX10.12.x for me)
Download the Printer and Scanner drivers and install them if you haven't already. Once the drivers are installed download and install: "EPSON Scan Common Updater" for "Mac OS X 10.11.x, Max OSX 10.12.x"

You should find this download on the same page as your other drivers, if you're running High Sierra i think the patch will be called something like "Mac Drivers 10.6 and later" which should hopefully do the same thing.

Once installed, on your mac go to > Applications > Epson Software > EPSON Software Settings.
If you're connecting with USB choose 'local', if you're connecting wirelessly choose 'Network'. Choose the first IP address that's suggested and click 'OK'. Then open the EPSON Scan software in the same Epson Software folder.

The scanner software should launch and you can now scan your documents by clicking 'Scan'.

If the EPSON scan software isn't finding your printer then go back to he EPSON Software Settings and try any other IP addresses on the list in.

I connect printer/scanner via WiFi. I have been working on this issue for weeks for my Epson 4750 multifunction. I removed the Epson software, reinstalled devices, changed names, reinstalled software, etc. I got the printer to stay online by assigning its location IP address. But, the only way I can connect to scan is to turn the Epson 4750 OFF and ON again. The scanner will go Offline if there is more than about 5 minutes inactivity. I totally give up.

I had this problem on Sierra and I spent many hours trying to figure it out. It finally turned out that my network settings were the cause of the problem. I had an old "search domain" listed on my TCP/IP settings. Once I removed that and made sure everything else was clean, this problem went away. If you use WiFi and/or a network cable, make sure you check each and every network connection inside the network settings to make sure you don't have any weird or old search domains. I can't believe this cause a problem with the scanner but still allowed the printer to work fine. This was driving me nuts - I even re-installed Sierra over the top of my old install and it didn't fix it. Now it's perfect.

I also do not have any of the Epson software or drivers installed. Only the Apple stuff that comes with the OS.

I'm not sure what you mean with "Image Capture" (an app or ??). Any scanning directly with the Epson printer setting installation does not work, giving the same error message every time only on scanning. It seems it's a device and softare related issue as I do have an Epson Perfection 4180 scanner that works perfectly well directly from the settings menu. I also have a 3:d party Scanning software (Vuescan) that works well without any issued . I think these facts pinpoints the problem to the Epson Xp-750 device and the related Epson software !?

This helped resolve my issue with a WF-3540 showing the same symptoms. Printer worked but not Image Capture or Scan from Printers and Scanners. The Epson scan software also worked. I had google.com listed under Advance Settings, DNS, Search Domains: Once I removed google.com and power cycled the printer, I was able to scan using all three applications. Never would have thought that to look under TC
