I just upgraded from El Capitan to Sierra on a Mid 2011 iMac i5 2.5Ghz 8GB Ram
The issue I'm experiencing is that about every 30 seconds like clockwork it will lock the screen and I half to wake it up and enter in my password. It does this regardless if there is activity or idle.
The os has been installed/upgraded for less than an hour.
This is making the computer unusable
I have the same problem, I seems to be related to connecting a HDMI display (Dell) via Apple HDMI adpater to my MacBook 15" 2015 model.
As soon as I connected to HDMI I have this issue.
Without the display not.
It seems like the power saving settings on the monitor also trigger the Mac to lock down via HDMI and overrule all settings I made.

If you can, open System Preferences > Security & Privacy then select the General tab.
Check your settings there.
Hi, that is one of the first areas I checked.
It's set to what it was before, to imediatly require a password after sleep or screen saver begins. Screen saver is set at 20 min
Energy saver, Display sleep is set at 30 min, Computer Sleep, never.

I had this issue after updating to MacOS Sierra, after about 4-5 reboots (in a row), then It worked itself out.
I had the same issue on one of my servers, and yes after a couple of reboots it went away.
