Q: How do I fix an iPhone 5s that only charges while turned off?

I have an iPhone 5s that recently stopped charging while it is turned on. If I turn the phone off, it charges normally. But when the phone is on, the charger doesn't show as connected and the battery doesn't charge. The charger works perfectly on my iPad. I read that this can be a software issue, so I updated the phone to iOS 10, and the problem still persists. How do I get my phone to charge normally again?

This sounds like an issue with either the charge cable or the lightening port:

Cable: these cables are notiriously prone to failure. I have encountered an almost identical issue Twice. Basically, a wire gets partially frayed so only a limited amount of power can pass through.  I also had the MFI chip in the cable stop working. i could still charge my iPad, but my iPhone wouldn't really charge at all. The cable might also be dirty.

The lightening port: may be damaged. While this hasn't happened to me before, but I have seen it happen. I'd ask to use another's cable and charger to see if it works. If it really is your port, you'll need to get in touch with someone qualified to fix the problem like Apple.

    Cable maintenance advice:

1: all ways use the hard plastic piece when inserting and removing the cable. Do not use the wire itself.

2: Don't put your cable in a position where it bends excessively. Especially near the ends.

3: don't rest your phone on the cable. Lift it up slightly to keep the phones weight from crushing the delicate cable end and bending the port on your phone.
