Q: Safari 10 will not open or repeatedly crashes after opening

On a fresh install of Sierra, Safari CRASHES withing seconds of opening.

 

When com.apple.safari and the Safari Library folders are removed and deleted Safari 10 will open but fails within a minute.

 

The issue seems to have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE USER CONTENT. So, there must be another underlying issue with the Safari Application itself. Whether it is a font issue a Java issue or something else, Apple should have dealt with this in the BETA stage.

 

Further, Apple should be having some presence on their site with information about this problem.

 

Understanding that this is a USER forum, I really don't need to hear any comment from some super user about that fact. But, as users we should demand more accountability when it come to core applications and services necessary for the system to operate properly and for a basic browser to operate without these issues.

    Have you tried troubleshooting Safari extensions and third party plug-ins  ???

     

    If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support

    All user content has been removed from my home Library. Does Safari content reside in other places?

    Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

     

    Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

    ALL of the above has been cleared. I don't use any extensions. There is no Safari/Cache database. Safari is already in developer mode and all caches have been cleared.

     

    IT STILL CRASHES! There is something wrong with the Safari Application itself, and a stand-alone installer would be the cure for this problem.

     

    Also, this needless integration of the Safari browser is the same nonsense that got Microsoft into trouble when they bundled some of their stuff with the system.

     

    If Firefox can work flawlessly why can't Safari. This is a widespread problem and needs Apple's intervention.

    OK, I found a solution and the culprit!

     

    I always save the downloaded installation file sent by the App Store.

     

    — Using the application Pacifist, I opened the "Essentials.pkg" file, and dragged the Safari application to my Desktop.

     

    — I opened the Safari application on the desktop and it created new Library files.

     

    — After the new Library files were created, I closed Safari.

     

    — After closing Safari, I replaced the Library files that were created with my old Library files.

     

    — The Safari application crashed on the next open.

     

    — I removed the Bookmarks.plist and the History files from Library/Safari

     

    — The Safari application opened, was stable for a while, and crashed.

     

    — I replaced the history files with the originals, and trashed the Bookmarks.plist

     

    — Safari opened and was stable, until it accessed a file somewhere that tried to recreate my Bookmarks.plist

     

    So, the culprit is the Bookmarks.plist or the database that contains the information to populate the Bookmarks.plist

     

    What I don't know:

     

    — Why dropping the Safari application file from the Essentials.pkg caused the installed iteration of the application in the "Applications" folder to finally work.

     

    — What specific file the application accesses to recreate the Bookmarks.plist, and

     

    — What I can do to rescue my applications and properly import them back into Safari.
