Does it really make sense to try to save $20 on a charger when it could damage a phone that would cost several hundred dollars to replace?

When buying power accessories for your iPhone, ensure that they are either genuine Apple products or that they have been certified as Made for iPhone (MFi).
Using uncertified or counterfeit accessories may damage your iPhone and/or adversely affect operation. Also note that Apple's warranty does not cover damage caused by use with a third party product that does not meet Apple's specifications.
The Apple Online Store in the US offers, for example, the MFi-certified Belkin Car Charger (2.4A/12W), currently priced at $19.99 along with an alternative that includes a built-in Lightning cable:
