Q: Completely resetting macbook pro

So a colleague of mine had a macbook pro that she doesn't use because it was 'broken' and said that i could try and fix it.

 

So the problem is the macbook pro won't boot past the 'chime'. it simply appears with a grey screen.

 

I have tried internet recovery (failed)

I have tried to reinstall os x (with a usb boot drive) (error, fail)

I have tried to erase the hard disk (disk wont unmount) (fail)

 

I can't think of anything else to do, anyone else got any ideas?

    How did Recovery mode fail?

    How did install ing OSX from USB device fail? You said error. What did the error message say?

    Could be that the internal drive failed.

    How did you try to erase the drive? What did yo boot with?

    Hi sorry i should have been more specific,

     

    Model - VIN, MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010)


    Internet recovery mode / standard recovery mode

    - disk utility 

         erase disk (error failed to unmount disk)

         First aid (successful 'problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting')

         erase disk ( error failed to unmount disk)

         First aid (updating boot support partitions for the volume as required. unable to unmount volume for repair)

    - osx install (not enough space on disk)

     

    note

    - during recovery mode during disk utility it takes a decent amount of time (5mins ish) to load the disks.

    - when erasing the drive i'm selecting the option, Format - OS X Extended (journaled) Scheme (GUID Partition Map)

    - i also can't seem to start the macbook in safe mode.

     

    Bootable USB

    I thought using a bootable usb would help. I have no idea which OS the macbook has so i created an el capitan bootable usb.

    - disk utility

         erase disk (error failed to unmount)

         First aid (successful 'problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting')

         First aid (updating boot support partitions for the volume as required. unable to unmount volume for repair)

    - install os x

         returns an error upon installation ( an error occurred while preparing the installation, try running again)

    Souds like the disk failed and needs to be replaced
