frozen system preference after entering apple ID password

I just installed a safari update and restarted my Mac Book pro 13'' (2012 edition) running on El-Captain. The system preference asked me to enter my Apple ID password, but as soon as I entered the password, the system preference is frozen. The password field is showing loading for Apple ID. I can't shut down, restart or even press the button to shut down my macbook pro. I get "systems preferences" interrupted shut down. To continue, quit system preferences" error message.

How do I resolve this?
